I am not sure about the correctness of the origin of this surname. However, it might lead to the conclusion that the famous Polish mathematician Stefan Banach was of Jewish origin. Stefan_Banach page says he came from a GóralRoman Catholic family. It would be very unusual to find any Jewish people among the Polish Górale.
