editThe word "bargello" appears to come from the late latin "bargillus" [Goth "bargi" and from the German "burg"]: castle or fortified tower. During Italian Middle Ages was the name given to a military captain in charge of keeping peace and justice (hence "captain of justice") during riots and uproars. In Florence was usually hired from a foreign city. It could be compared with current Chief of police. The name Bargello was left to the building, office of the captain.
Footnotes/references
editThe many footnote [1]s seem to connect to references abc, abcd, abcde. But it is not clear what these abc things refer from. Can they be made any clearer?
