Noteworthy former players

edit

I started a "Other noteworthy former players" list for Barnet, I am pretty sure we can find some more. Govvy 23:54, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

is it going to include players who played for the bees towards the end of their careers, like Ray Clemence and Jimmy Greaves? Grutness...wha? 01:29, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

- I had a look at Alan Pardew page and saw no mention of any affliction with Barnet, so I would like to know what the relationship is. Govvy 19:59, 28 May 2006 (UTC).Reply

Pardew appeared as a player for Barnet in 1993/94. I think you mean affiliation rather than afflicition, although maybe that was intentional!! --84.65.139.137 10:51, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah - confirmed by http://allfootballers.com/. He was on the squad (although they say it was 95/96... which is right?). And the same site doesn't list Andy Clarke as ever appearing for Barnet - anyone able to confirm? Grutness...wha? 11:10, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
ahhh skip that second part - I'd forgotten it only lists years in the football league so won't list him if he played while Barnet was in the conference. Grutness...wha? 11:24, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alan Pardew finished his playing career at Barnet, he was a regular starter while he was there between 1995 and 1997.rudebwoyben

current squad

edit

Albert Adomah is Number 7. It said so in the latest Barnet Programme at home to Bristo Rovers in the fa cup on saturday.

Managers

edit

I have added a new section for Barnet Managers - believe I have last 30 years correct, but obviously there are still names to add prior to this. Added brief updates Alan Pardew & Alan Mullery pages. Looking at Tony Cottee page which says he resigned! from Barnet, regards, Kickit

Added extra managers back to WWII - selection committee prior to this. Only vague dates known so have left them off for now. regards, Kickit

Updated main history section regarding Ray Clemence with correct dates etc. Kickit

Section revised July 2007. Kickit

Record Attendances

edit

Added home & away numbers. Regards, Kickit

I am thinking of removing this section completely, we don't need these statistics in the article. Who else is in agreement for this? Govvy 01:00, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Has been removed by someone.

Honours

edit

Updated this section. there are lots more in earlier years plus reserves. regards, kickit

Isn't it a bit over the top? Govvy 22:11, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Maybe. Wikipedia is probably the most up to date list! Kickit

Club v Council

edit

Whoever has stated that that club will move to a new stadium at Canons Park in 2007-08 is way wide of the mark. There are no plans to build a Football League ground at Canons Park. The deal struck between Wealdstone FC, the London Borough of Harrow and Barnet FC explicitly states that the new ground cannot be used for league football. Barnet's involvement in this project is confined to building training facilities for the squad and a youth academy.

Currently the last sentence of this section starts "There is now in 2013" indicating it hasn't been updated since then. It and other phrases - has been quashed; have always been; current site; have so far; has taken - need to be modified. Mcljlm (talk) 12:50, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've decided to remove that club vs council section anyway, it seems out of date. Govvy (talk) 13:02, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Most appearances/goals

edit

An anon recently changed these stats on the article (see here). I've reverted them, since the idea of someone scoring 400 goals in 6 seasons is, well ridiculous unless you're Dixie Dean - so this looks lijke vandalism. If anyone has any evidence to the contrary, though... Grutness...wha? 04:42, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

For those that don't know:

North Barnet (Chipping Barnet) - Brunswick Park, Coppetts, East Barnet, High Barnet, Oakleigh, Totteridge, Underhill. Geographically still tie into Hertfordshire. In 1965 it was just the administration of these area's that moved to London to minimise the administration costs of Hertford. However they still are considered part of Hertfordshire geographically, peace Govvy 13:13, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is not the case. Wikipedia: naming conventions (places) uses current, not historic or former postal geography. MRSCTalk 21:35, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. Barnet is no longer officially in Hertfordshire (sadly), and as such should be listed only as Greater London. It is in neither the traditional nor ceremonial county of Herts for official purposes, though still has historic ties with it. Grutness...wha? 23:27, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I got another thing for you lot, next time you goto a match, get a programme and look at the address for Barnet FC. It clearly states it is in Hertfordshire! Govvy 10:45, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Continued use of Postal counties doesn't really prove anything. Hampton Court Palace is in Surrey according to that scheme. 15:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Addressing the address, if it says Hertfordshire, it's still in Hertfordshire, it's that simple to me!! Govvy 16:00, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately it's not that simple to anyone else though - especially to the administration of England's counties. Barnet isn't in Hertfordshire to them - and it's those counties that are used on WP. Grutness...wha? 04:57, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Grutness is right. And I doubt many people in the former Avon, where the postal county is also unchanged, see it that way. MRSCTalk 07:36, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Govvy you seem to have a bee in your bonnet about this issue. Wikipedia has a clear policy on this which we should adhere to. Barnet is in London and has been so for 43 years: you may not like it but it's true (though I don't really understand why someone wouldn't want to be part of such a great city). Thus any references to Barnet as a present settlement (including its football team) should describe it as being in London, not Hertfordshire. Postal counties are even described as 'former' by Royal Mail, because they are no longer required on postal addresses. Whether a place is in a London Borough is the deciding factor, not an optional component of a postal address which is historic anyway. Not that the following are deciding factors, but Barnet is also covered by TFL, the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade and Ambulance, the 020 telephone code, etc: it has had no real links to Hertfordshire at all for almost half a century. And whoever wrote that 'Barnet is in both London and Hertfordshire': I'm afraid that isn't possible, because London and Hertfordshire are two separate administrative areas. Also 'Greater London' simply means the administrative area that is London - it does not imply that Greater London is somehow outside 'proper' London. For example, both Barnet and Westminster are in Greater London, and they are also both in London. 79.66.216.127 (talk) 01:00, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

FWIW I've been trying to explain all this sort of stuff to people ever since moving to New Zealand 30+ years ago when they ask me if I'm a Londoner - "I was born in Hertfordshire but where I was born became part of London when I was two..." Grutness...wha? 01:25, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Very true. The 1471 battle was a pivotal one in the Wars of the Roses. I'll add that in. Grutness...wha? 01:33, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added section for this. Will expand with relevant details later kickit...

Trivia

edit

Removed this section as proposed by wikipedia. Two items remain to be added... any suggestions where?

  • The long standing BBC Football commentator John Motson is a supporter, or at least has strong ties with the club having worked for the Finchley and Barnet Press in his early days as a journalist. He seems to mention Barnet at every possible moment, even when commentating on England World Cup matches.
  • A frequent highlight of Barnet's pre-season programme is a traditional friendly against top north London side Arsenal. Arsenal's training ground is at Shenley, Hertfordshire, just to the northwest of Barnet and their reserve team plays its home games at Underhill.

Backroom staff.

edit

I noticed this article on the BBC site for Mark Stein. So I was wondering shouldn't we have a backroom staff section on here.? Govvy (talk) 10:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

possibly spurious "fact" in text

edit

I've just removed part of the section on the club's nickname and crest from the text - it's very non-encyclopedic in style, and worse, I can find no verification of it anywhere. It was added by an anon almost exactly a year ago. Here's the text in question:

This Badge was designed by the chairman at the time Mr Sidney Robert Price. Mr Sidney Robert Price has only recently been recognised as the man behind the Barnet Badge. A fact how ever well known by generations of Prices' from Sidney Robert Price down to Barry Price, James Price, James Price jnr, Jack Price and Harry Price. A part of Barnet Football Club history will live on forever with the Price Family.

If sources can be found, feel free to rewrite it into something approximating WP style and put it back. If not, however... Grutness...wha? 12:49, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added it.....Mr JAMES PRICE....Grandson of Sidney Robert Price....He designed the badge which the club have recognised and even pronted inone match day program so feel free to put it back in.....jamessbprice@outlook.com if you need to get in touch!!! or speak with my father ....Sydney Roberts 3rd son.....he was there when he did it!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.124.55.1 (talk) 21:23, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Lead

edit

The lead could do with a tidy-up from someone who knows the subject better than me. It includes a potted history, but as it stands it's rather random: it starts with a failed Conference playoff in 2004, describes promotion a year later (only then explaining that the club had been in the League before; no mention of that promotion), and then darts back to events in the 1992–93 season. A brief history in chronological order, in particular summarising Barnet's periods in and our of the League, would make more sense and be more representative; this smacks of WP:RECENTISM. Dave.Dunford (talk) 10:07, 21 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I just read the top part, you're dead right, it is all over the place. There is a lack of references also. Govvy (talk) 14:43, 21 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Have moved it around of the top of the article, it looks listy to me, I was wondering if we should remove some of the content, I will have to find some references Govvy (talk) 22:47, 21 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure this should have been removed, especially the development squad who mostly have pages of their own. Kosack (talk) 07:10, 31 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

It might be better to create Barnet F.C. Reserves and Academy page. It would need a fair amount of information on it, but I think there should be enough around to create a decent page. Govvy (talk) 12:24, 31 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Barnet F C is no longer in Barnet

edit

Barnet now play and operate from London Borrow of Harrow, from Edgware. So they are no longer in Chipping Barnet. So can the last edit please revert all his edits thanks. Govvy (talk) 12:32, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Their official website gives the contact address as The Hive, so it would be interesting to know what presence the club maintains in Chipping Barnet, to justify the assertion that they are based there? Eagleash (talk) 12:38, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
They had a Barnet FC shop in Barnet, I am not sure if it's still there, it might be. But most of their operation is now over in Edgware. Govvy (talk) 12:42, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't sound like a 'base' to me... Eagleash (talk) 12:56, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

(Note, I have restored Edgware to the lead, and requested that no more edit warring be conducted, directing discussion on that particular point to this talk page. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:47, 7 September 2016 (UTC))Reply

I believe that it should be listed as based in Chipping Barnet on the main page until the matter is resolved here. Thus, I will change it to Chipping Barnet until this resolution takes place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.147.27.250 (talk) 08:54, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I counted 5 different IPs with the same agenda, I don't know if it's one person but maybe you should create an account for editing, using citation and writing an article that is neutral. But upon the evidence from sources I see, it's clear to me the club has moved and operates out of Edgware, that as much says Barnet is based in Edgware to me. Govvy (talk) 11:04, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I reckon that this is indeed one person. Note that all five of those IPs – 121.214.160.124, 110.149.153.39, 121.220.85.138, 121.220.46.80 and 137.147.27.250 – are located in Victoria, Australia. Bluebird207 (talk) 12:58, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Development squad?

edit

Why have you split it? If they are registered to play in the first team, put them in the first team list. Govvy (talk) 22:25, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I got no response so I have gone ahead and reverted it back. Govvy (talk) 13:41, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Reverted back for the following reasons:
1) they are listed as development squad players on the link in the section heading
2) inappropriate to create a separate article for reserve/academy players for a League 2 club with a relatively small squad
3) academy was only founded in the late 2000s so little scope for including academy graduates
4) U23s don't play in a recognised league

Please post on my talk page over issues like this as I won't routinely check the article talk page. OGLV (talk) 18:19, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

? I don't understand why you do that, they are first team players at that level and should be listed as such. They arn't playing in reserves. Govvy (talk) 21:16, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Have you read the source linked to in the development squad heading? That is how the club categorises them. They are only "first team" in the sense that they are too old for the youth team, and don't play frequently if at all for the first team, which is why the club categorises them in that way. OGLV (talk) 21:21, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I really don't understand why you continue to split these players out the first team, they are training in the first team and not training with the youth team that much. They are very much integrated with the first team. Govvy (talk) 22:34, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
