Band Background
editDan (main singer) had a flyer through the door from woody (drummer) advertising drum lessons. Dan gave him a call and then they became a duo and that's as much as I know. If you have anything to add to it, please do.
BʌSTILLE FʌN
Dan was heard singing in his bedroom since he kept his voice hidden for years, one of his friends-(or his sister Fran) overheard him and encouraged him to unleash his voice and start writing more songs-this is where Dan became a star in the rising. Alchemy, Words For Words, Telegraph Road, Irreverence are all his old songs. Dan started writing with his friend Ralph from "To Kill A King" (A brother band to Bastille) and they produced country/cowboy/western music in their duo band "Annie Oakley Hanging" in 2009, "13 Steps" show's Dan's impressive vocals since in Annie Oakley Hanging they normally put both their voices to the test, so 13 Steps was Dan's song. In October (2015) Ralph from To Kill A King posted numerous Tweets (Dan's re-Tweets...and saying that it isn't going good so far) that Annie Oakley is obviously returning-despite Bastille's sophomore album coming out at any time this or next year.
While in a club one day Will Farquarson approached Dan Smith, Will got talking with Dan and soon Dan expected him into the band to play Bass. Will lied about the one genre of music he likes, Jazz to get into Bastille. Not even Bastille can tell you how Kyle joined-it was the same as Will's in a club but they all by the sounds of it got drunk.
Dan Smith, wears his bracelet proudly now! But the reason why he wears a bracelet is because of his mother, she gave it to him after their first gig. Dan at first suspected that Woody (Drummer) was going to be an old man in his eighties, he was shocked to see Woody and they became friends instantly.FirebreatherXStormer (talk) 20:31, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
(It's TelegRalph road, not Telegraph. As in Ralph.) 96.68.160.225 (talk) 19:56, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
Will or William?
editHis full name is William so it's Will for short, just as Dan's is Daniel.
The article has no sources or refs. Nor does the article state what genre of music (indie/electro pop) the band plays. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.115.22.185 (talk) 09:43, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Genres
editIf anyone wished to add or change genres could they please find sufficient sources to show that a majority of good sources consider the band to fall into that genre. Just adding genres that you would like the band to be considered part of isn't good enough. --Michig (talk) 07:47, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
So far we have had:
Bastille are a major label commercial pop band. Their music is not stylistically alternative and they are in no sense 'indie', either via style or label. They are not a band that plays a huge range of styles. They play pop music, not 6 different genres. --Michig (talk) 12:40, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
iTunes is not a reliable source for genre (neither is the Allmusic metedata before you try there). The Allmusic bio calls them synth-pop, that's one source - if sources generally agree on synthpop then that would be justified in the article. --Michig (talk) 12:43, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
For me it's also hard to put them into indie rock (as seen on Discogs). They have a style that doesn't compare to rock music. But i can say, it's some kind of new, modern pop music. Indie Pop could work out. --Saviour1981 (talk) 21:20, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
Their music is within the confines of rock and pop so it's kind of difficult what to really call them. I've seen a couple of sources where Dan Smith doesn't think of the band as a rock band and there is another source calling them rock. Here is one source that states they're a rock band.[1] TheOnlyOne12 (talk) 18:07, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Again, we have users adding improperly-sourced genres. Why do people so desperately want this band to be indie when they're not? The infobox should list a broad genre that covers the band's music, unless they have made more than one type of music. Bastille haven't. They're a pop group, that could be described as a rock group. We should go with what the majority of sources agree on, not every genre that anyone has ever used to describe them. And certainly not genres from iTunes listings. --Michig (talk) 20:14, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
Bastille is most definitely alt. They are playing Lollapalooza which is not a Pop fest. They are played constantly on SiriusXM Alt Nation and were nominated for 2014 American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Artist and 2014 iHeart Radio Alternative Song of the Year. How are they not Alternative? Wompajuice (talk) 22:46, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
- Because their music is not alternative rock. --Michig (talk) 06:00, 26 September 2018 (UTC) And Bruno Mars is playing Lollapalooza this year - does that make him 'alt' too? --Michig (talk) 06:04, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Please support your opinions with facts or citations or it’s not true. If they get nominations for music awards for Alt[1] [2]and are played on Alt radio, they are alt. See my cited source of the American Music Awards and Billboard where they are ranked 32 on Alternative list. Wompajuice (talk) 10:56, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- You're missing the point. We could probably find about 12 different genres that sources use to describe the band. That doesn't mean that we should list 12 different genres in the infobox, or that we should pick the ones out of those that we like. We should have a broad genre in the infobox, which represents consensus of the majority of sources. If you want good sources for Pop, Google has plenty, e.g. The Guardian: "With their muted electronic beats and rousing, arena-friendly choruses, Bastille are the archetypal modern pop band", The Telegraph: "pop", The List: "pop superstars". All better sources than an iTunes listing and the names of a chart, radio stations, and some minor awards that they happen to appear on. Pop music is exactly the broad genre that we should use. --Michig (talk) 16:50, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Did you just call the American Music Awards a minor award? My sources of Billboard and AMA are much more credible than the Guatdian and Telegraph. Calling something Pop to Alt fans is a slap in the face and disrespectful. I’d rather see no genre than Pop listed Wompajuice (talk) 18:31, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- Are you serious? The Guardian and the Telegraph not credible? Billboard also calls them a synth-rock band ([2]), so it seems they can't make their minds up. Personally I find calling commercial major label pop 'indie' or 'alternative' to be offensive and disrespectful to artists who don't enjoy the same publicity as bands like Bastille simply because they are genuinely indie or alternative and therefore not of interest to companies like EMI. I would rather see no genre listed than something that is blatantly incorrect to anyone who has spent any amount of time listening to genuine indie pop and alternative rock music. --Michig (talk) 18:44, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- This article from an NME columnist sums it up quite well, calling Bastille "corporate ‘indie’...a boyband in alt-rock clothing". --Michig (talk) 18:48, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
I’m beginning to think this is more about your personal opinion of the band. Being Alt isn't about your label. Try turning on some Alt radio stations. I hear Bastille on several of them including SiriusXM Alt Nation and DC101 Alt Rock, which Bastille is playing their office party on 12/4. Strange councidence? Wompajuice (talk) 19:58, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- It's about not having a crap article that states misleading genres. Alternative rock is a style of music that is very different to what Bastille play. Indie pop is another distinct style of music, that is nothing like Bastille. And we now have indie rock listed in the article, along with two other genres, all sourced to an article that only calls them electro-pop. Indie rock! It's just ludicrous. --Michig (talk) 20:15, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
I’m beginning to think you know very little about music. Is that why you insult new users? Quit power tripping. Wompajuice (talk) 20:46, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- You don't have any valid arguments so you resort to insults? How childish. --Michig (talk) 21:04, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Like you’d know what a valid argument is. Glad you could finally find a source instead of stating opinions. For every source you cite as Pop, I can find three that says Alt. Wompajuice (talk) 21:15, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- Google has 13 million hits for Bastille + pop, 337,000 for Bastille + alternative rock. But I'm sure you're right. --Michig (talk) 21:27, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Right. I’m sure there are 13 million articles about Bastille. Lol. Do you even Google bro? Wompajuice (talk) 22:25, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
There seem to be a lot of Op Ed opinion pieces being used as sources. It should be noted that these are not facts. An award nomination in an Alt Rock category is fact. Being played on Alt Rock radio stations are facts. Being hired by Alt Rock stations to play their shows is a fact. Being categorized by genre in a music store is a fact. An author who works for Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Telegraph or Guardian calling Bastille Pop or whatever else is nothing more than that authors opinion. These are not facts and are unreliable sources. Wompajuice (talk) 16:32, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
(Slightly late but) The fact is their songs vary from style to style. Their first album was like indie synth-pop and the like, whereas their second album was more of a half pop, half rock kind of thing. I have no idea what oph1 and 2 are doing, but oph3 was pretty heavily rock-like and oph4 was almost hip-hop for some songs, with Grip being EDM (which makes sense, considering it was a collab with Seeb). The mixtapes aren't really supposed to be their style, as they're more for experimentation, but they do make up around half of their songs. Keeping the upcoming Doom Days in mind, I would go with just a generic rock for now, as that's what most sources (and people) seem to agree on. 96.68.160.225 (talk) 20:08, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

People keep spamming Bastille (band) page with false information
editUser:USAQuidditch and others keep on spamming "Bastille (band)" page with false information. Specifically they keep erroneously stating that bassist Will Farquarson has been replaced by Merle Allin. This is *false*. How can we get them to stop? Will Farquarson himself has tweeted that this information is incorrect and false. — @librariegrrl (talk • contribs) 23:20, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
Members
editThe NME article published on 7 July 2016 references the current line up of Dan Smith, Chris Wood, Will Farquarson, and Kyle Simmons. There has been no announcements on any departures or replacements in reliable sources. Barnes is listed as a the touring member only and as such should not be listed in the infobox (see for instance The Rolling Stones as precedent). Karst (talk) 12:44, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Edit warring
editI have protected the page, again, as the disruption resumed immediately after the last protection expired.
For sanity's sake, can we please have a discussion on this talk page about the nature of the dispute here, and the parties involved? From my scan of the history, it seems USAQuidditch (t c) is the one who is inserting names that everyone else seems to disagree with, but I'd like to actually have that confirmed and/or refuted by parties involved before I consider any other actions here. –Darkwind (talk) 09:14, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Darkwind: I found the insertion of the name rather curious. Kendrick is an American drummer, formerly with Devo. There is no suggestion that he has joined the band or is still an active musician. The editor has used a Discogs.com reference to add credibility to the claim. However, as is clear from the editing history of that page, that the same editor has added this to that page too. According the NME interview published last week and referenced in the article there has been no line-up change. Previously the same editor has inserted the names of Bob Mothersbaugh and Merle Allin, neither of whom have any relation to the band. Additionally, the articles for Good Grief (song), Wild World (album) and Template:Bastille have seen the same erroneous information added. Despite warnings and being asked to engage with the issue on this Talk page, the editor has only responded with reverts without any comments in the edit summary. Karst (talk) 10:04, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Karst: Thanks for the info. Curious if anyone else has any comments or if USAQuidditch has anything to say in his defense. If not, I'm leaning towards unprotecting this page and just blocking him if the disruptive edits continue, since full protection is not fair to everyone else who wants to edit this article if it's only one person who's acting contrary to everyone else.
- Also, FYI, you can't edit in a {{ping}} after you've signed your remarks. A ping will only trigger a notification to the intended user if it's added in the same edit with a four-tilde signature. If you realize after-the-fact that you forgot to ping someone, you need to add a new line with the ping and sign it again. –Darkwind (talk) 22:49, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
"History" sub-sections
editHi. What's going on with the "History" sub-sections? The timespans of "Bad Blood and All This Bad Blood (2012–2015)" and " VS., Wild World (2014–2017)" overlap and there's duplicated content. Robby.is.on (talk) 10:09, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Start-class?
editI doubt that this article is still Start-class. Pineappman (talk) 20:00, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Nobody pays attention. Just change it yourself. I say "C" because the inline citations are shit. Could be brought to a B, or even go for GAN if someone wanted to (I refuse because the only reason I looked this up was how annoying it was hearing at the grocery store)..Outdatedpizza (talk) 05:42, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Image captions say the band, but the only person in them is the lead singer
editMore pictures are always welcome, but let's be honest. Outdatedpizza (talk) 05:40, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
The constant addition of David Kendrick needs to be addressed.
editAbout six years ago, a user by the name of USAQuidditch, for seemingly unknown reasons, kept on adding the names of living persons such as David Kendrick, Merle Allin, and Mark Mothersbaugh into this page, and adding dubious references to validate their claim. None of these people were ever part of the band, and this was shown to be true. Now, or at least in the last few months, IP address user 185.47.253.246 [3] seems intent on doing the same thing. Not only are they adding the name of David Kendrick, American former drummer for DEVO, to the members list, they've completely fabricated various references to him on the page, and to Bastille on Kendrick's page. It's quite odd, and someone needs to address this. David Kendrick is not a member of this band, and all the references this user includes contain no mention of him anywhere (save for a single setlist.fm date, which is also a wiki site where anyone can edit). Thank you. JesseAF13 (talk) 07:23, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
