Outrageous paragraph

edit

It hould be noted, however, that in the colonial wars waged by the Spanish in Morocco, systemic brutality and armed reprisals against civilians had been the norm. Curiously, Franco intervened to put an end to the Moroccans' practice of castrating their slain enemies' bodies.

I find that this paragraph is a coarse excuse for a mass murder as it happened in Badajoz. IMO should be removed.

The paragraph only states that to the troops involved (Spanish Legionnaires and Moroccan Regulares) there would have been nothing abnormal in the mass executions of civilians in a captured city. Obviously this does not excuse the action on moral grounds, nor was this intended in the slightest. The bit about Franco illustrates his peculiar personality: he cared enough not to offend Christian sensibilities over respect for the dead, yet he never bothered to actually halt the slaughter. That hardly reflects well on him. Albrecht 01:57, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I tried to provide some balance to the part about the alleged massacre. Perhaps somebody with a better knowledge of the subject and better sources could help out here. I find that one link and the mention of one general history of the war (out of thousands) are not enough to sustain an outright accusation of mass murder.Aussiesta 13:13, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can we have a source for some of these massacres in Morocco, please? KingOfAfrica 01:41, 11 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
