Monocacy Junction versus Monocacy
editHas there been any discussion about the preferred title of this battle? I grew up minutes away from this site, and have never heard it referred to as "The Battle of Monocacy Junction." It is my understanding that the general rule of thumb in naming battles was to name battles won by the Confederates after geographical features and battles won by Union after place names. I don't even believe the railroad junction was actually named Monocacy Junction. I believe it was known as Frederick Junction. I propose we move the article to "Battle of Monocacy" and make "Battle of Monocacy Junction" the redirect. —Xanderer 13:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- Since the NPS site that we use as a guide says simply Monocacy, I would not object to renaming. Make sure you rename the order of battle articles, too, if others agree. Hal Jespersen 14:39, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- Monocacy is by far the more common name (named for the Monocacy River that runs through the battlefield). Monocacy Junction was used in several Union accounts (named for the train depot that was the closest "settlement"), but it rarely appears in Confederate accounts. The NPS uses both terms on their website (the map link is entitled Battle of Monocacy Junction, while the on-line map itself simply says Monocacy). I agree with Hal - make the changes, make a redirect page for the Battle of Monocacy Junction to Battle of Monocacy, etc. Scott Mingus 17:04, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- I forgot about this for a while. After trying to do the move just now, it seems an administrator is needed because there already is a Redirect page called Battle of Monocacy. Hal Jespersen 23:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Casualties
editThe infobox and main body of the article disagree: 2359 total vs. 1294 (which includes captured) plus 700-900. Clarityfiend 23:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- I fixed and cited consistent numbers. Thanks for catching. Hal Jespersen 00:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Changing it to Tactical CSA Victory, Strategic Union Victory
editExactly the same as the title. I'm arguing that it should be, since it had success in its purpose (i.e. to delay the Confederate troops). If you see fault in this, say so and why. Executor Tassadar (talk) 12:28, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Early's objective was not to capture Washington, but draw troops away from Petersburg and Richmond which was accomplished. Topcat777(talk) 20:32, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
