GA nomination on hold

Ok, I have a few concerns with this article:

  • First, the lead. Battlefield 2142 is a first-person shooter computer game designed by Digital Illusions CE and is the fifth game in the series. It is set in the 22nd century, during a new ice age. Currently, there have been over one million rounds played since its release.[1] It is the first Battlefield game not to feature the United States of America as a playable military faction. et al. Ok, first, the beginning paragraph seems kind of clumsy, with It is... It is... repetition. The second paragraph seems to just talk about multiplayer, not giving much info on what the game is about, interesting features, etc.
  • "Battlefield 2142 uses a modified, critically acclaimed, engine of Battlefield 2 and is the first game in the series to not include the United States as a playable faction." - source needed for both parts of that sentence.
  • Soldier Kits section- merge into gameplay and expand; right now it has little context.
  • Some dates need to be linked. See WP:DATE. (ex: expansion packs section.)
  • Rumors of development- it's been released, so why are they rumors?
  • All images need fair use rationale. See the images of Halo 2 for an example of what I mean.
  • Image captions: lots of the captions don't have any context. What the hell is a Hachimoto? I can assume its some type of vehicle, but point is its pointless there if you've never played BF2142.
  • Beta release: fold into development.
  • Perhaps fold the advertising into reception?

Dåvid Fuchs (talk / frog blast the vent core!) 20:50, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Did most of your request, but the fair use was already on the images and the beginning paragraph is fine in my opinion as well as the advertising. Good suggestions however, I did about seventy percent of what you suggested. Pembroke 23:04, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

The paragraph describes what a Hachimoto is (the picture is merely labeled so as to reference the paragraph). What should be put in its place? A paragraph description? (that's what the section is for) I took out the part about it carrying a squad (there are only 2 soldiers, and "squad" may be misleading to think that there are more).Echo.brian 20:42, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Image captions should be for the most part completely self-contained, i.e. not relying on the article prose to fill in the blanks. Green451 16:11, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd have to second that you integrate the section on advertising into Reception; it'd make the flow more logical. Seegoon 14:40, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Did it. Shall it be passed now? Pembroke 21:30, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
How 'bout my second round of comments above? This has gotten complicated, as technically I am the one responsible for passing the article, because I took up GA reviewing it first. The article should not have been "un-held" until I either passed or failed the article (although David caught a lot of things that I missed and probably wouldn't have noticed, which is always nice). Anywho, that's in the past, and I await the implementation of my other comments. Hope this works for you. Green451 03:09, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh, never mind, I see that David already passed the article. No worries, I'll just implement some of the comments myself. Green451 03:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Added Rank Area

I have Added the ranks section, this contains all ranks in the game and where the more unusual ranks come from

Feeblezak 21:53, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

It's interesting, however for space requirements I recommend that it be compressed.Echo.brian 17:42, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Anyone think the giant list of ranks is not appropriate for the article, or at least deserves a cleanup? I said that last night, but an IP vandal deleted it. GOLAASTL24 18:32, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Characters Section

I think this section should be removed because the characters have absolutely nothing to do with the game (they are merely mentioned on the map loading screens). They play no role in the game, and are not seen by the player even once.Echo.brian 17:45, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Patches

I can't find the mention of any patches on the site. The latest one is patch 1.20. And word of warning: THe new patch takes about 3 hours to download even with ADSL. Chessmanlau 22:25, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes someone should add a page about the patches. But no it doesn't take like 3 hours.Bygeorge2512 16:03, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Lol...mine must be slow or something. Haha. It took 3 hours on mine. How long DOES it take? Chessmanlau 04:26, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Maybe on the day you downloaded it, the server was busy with downloads by thousands of gamers. By the way, it only took me 30min or so to download. INFORMATION CENTER© (TC) 05:39, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

There has recently been 1.40 patch released, I believe this should get a mention in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.202.230.181 (talk) 19:56, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Northern Strike Release

Can someone tell me where to find the release dates for northern strike on the EA website, i couldnt find it and it seems odd to me that they would release it on the 16/3 as stated in this article when the anniversary of the battle for the bridge at remagen is on the 7/3.

The preload is on March 1st. No release date has been announced, and I highly doubt it is the 16th. The announced Rolling Thunder tourney by EA is set for the 18th which is only two days after the 16th.--Arrowhead2006 04:10, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
March 8th is the release [1]GOLAASTL24 04:53, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Northern strike is out

I'm not good at writing, so I won't do this myself, but NS has been out since 11:30am PST. Vixwald 20:05, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Addware Laws in Australia

I'm from Melbourne, Australia, and as such i never had the in-game billboards...but i was shocked to come across an add for Intel in Northern Strike, i was under the impression that there were laws preventing this in Australia. I assume this has something to do with the fact that i downloaded it from EA Link rather then bought it locally, but wouldnt the laws still cover this? if anyone has an answer for this i'd love to hear it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.4.74.65 (talk) 13:39, 11 March 2007 (UTC).

They should, technically, but if EA was confident enough to stick in-game ads in with Northern Strike, then they may have found a way around that law. I'd hate to try your luck in court though.--JavaJawaUK 11:25, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Its all good, i found my answer in section 4 of the adware bill attached to this article.

Requesting Permission

To add a one sentence description of each map [excluding Titan maps] to the maps section. It wouldn't consume much space and would help expand on some of the settings, eg:

Belgrade - Constricted, close-quarters combat set in a conurbation of the Serbian capital. Battles in the central park can be intense and shifting

or

Shuhia Taiba - Vehicle dominated combat on an EU farming project. A mountain complex in the center of the map makes for a heated battle.

If I get two backings, I'll go ahead with it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JavaJawaUK (talkcontribs) 09:54, 15 March 2007 (UTC).

Why don't you wait until we get more people to agree on this. I am OK with it, but let's wait for 2-3 more votes. GOLAASTL24 03:54, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

I think that would be a good idea, so it isnt just a list of seemingly random names to some people Bob Plano 00:25, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I vote yes. Just dont make it too long. Laconia 00:27, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I second the yes votes. Some short summaries of each map would be nice. You'd have to indicate which maps are part of the Northern Strike Expansion, though (You're doing those as well, I assume?) --Wunderbear 08:50, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree this is a good idea, but one warning... It would be ill considered to attempt to describe strategy or combat regarding these maps. Phrases like "vehicle dominated" and "heated battle" are not generally objective and could be construed as violations of WP:NOR and WP:NPOV --Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 09:45, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

technically, it'd all be OR unless you have a website with a review of each map to cite. Riffraffselbow 23:09, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
So I say go with it, with respect to Oni Ookami Alfador's comments GOLAASTL24 03:17, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

The "buddies" aspect of the game.

Unlike in Battlefield 2, 2142 has a buddies section where you can send messages to each other and join on each others servers.

I dont think it has that added in the article. Perhaps we could? Laconia 00:37, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Buddy List

I agree with you. That probably would be a good idea. But we have to be careful to make sure it doesn't turn into a game guide. (I might be too lazy to do it...and I want to hear other's opinions.) Redoctober240 01:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

About the long download time for patch...

The patch download link from the oficial EA website at [[2]] takes a long time. Instead, places like [[3]] have faster download times (20-30min!). Hope this helps. Redoctober240 01:50, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

pfft, downloaded for me in like 7 minutes. Must be your connection.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 03:06, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

No it's just EA's website. On the day the patch was released it took well over 20 minutes to download it so I decided to try EA link instead and it downloaded in about 2 minutes.Echo.brian 22:55, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

that has to do with everyone trying to download the patch at once--Manwithbrisk 20:08, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Nuclear war?

I know we cant add this to the article without sources, but does anyone else think that the opening clip suggests a nuclear war? after you see the earth freeze from the north down, you see bright flashes scattered around europe and africa, almost like nuclear weapons simultaneously detonating. Also, there is that billboard from armoured fury with the watch and the mushroom cloud. (and, yes i know a mushroom cloud doesnt have to be from a nuclear weapon). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.4.74.65 (talk) 15:51, 26 March 2007 (UTC).

Maybe, maybe not. The point is there is no assertion by EA or DICE in or out of game as to the likelihood of that so it doesn't belong on Wikipedia. As a result, it's not even worth discussing.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 17:33, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

If its not worth discussing, then why did you discuss it despite the fact i wrote in the first sentence "i know we cant add this to the article..."?

If you look closely, you'll see that the little flashes are where the maps are taking place

Xaritix 01:25, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

well that solves it, thanks.

Unlocks Section

Someone added a giant unlocks section. I removed it because Wikipedia is not a game guide/Internet guide, it is not encyclopedic in any form, and people using Wikipedia as a source of research will not care about the names of futuristic weapons and items. GOLAASTL24 17:55, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Image under "Titan"

The image of the support class behind the IPS is completely unrelated to the section on titan mode. Someone should probably take that out. ZenSaohu 00:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Agreed. Someone should put it under Unlocks and put the Titan assualt scenario picture under Titan. --Putmalk 13:51, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Ok. I changed it, but not extremely well. Someone should make it so that the picture is above the Story headline, not next to it. The Titan picture is fine, however. --Putmalk 01:54, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion

Shouldn't the story section be BEFORE the gameplay section? It seems pretty ackward to talk about gameplay, maps, unlocks, etc. and all of a sudden talk about the story. It should be the story first, then the details on the gameplay. What do you guys think? INFORMATION CENTER© (TC) 09:18, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

It makes sense to me...Mawfive 21:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Mods Article Creation?

Lots of mods are coming out for Battlefield 2142. Do you think it is necessary to create another article called the List of Battlefield 2142 Mods, or should we wait/not create an article? --Putmalk 17:08, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

We shouldn't create an article for this because this is not a game guide, it is an encyclopedia. Therefore, we should only put information that is accurate about the game and that is ONLY about the game, not unofficial (by definition of EA approval) modifications of it. INFORMATION CENTER© (TC) 02:54, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Well check out BF1942. It's got a page of the unofficial mods. That needs to be removed then, right? --Putmalk 01:49, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, then let's wait until people agree on making a page about the mods. INFORMATION CENTER© (TC) 04:03, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Many other articles have corresponding mod pages like the one at List of Battlefield 1942 mods, and I believe that their existence supports the creation of one for BF2142. I will do my best to find and link to a couple more to support my view more concretely.
It is often useful to indent your posts on talk pages using colons (:) - add one more in front of your post than the person before you had. For instance, Information Center's last post had none, so I added one. The next poster should add two. This helps to make exhanges more readable! PaladinWhite 12:30, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

I don't think this article needs a mod page. What use would it be?

Patch1.25

Patch 1.25 is out, anyone going to comment on the incredible number of fixes it has. It fixes almost everything wrong with 2142, but it is an incremental patch of some 289MB. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pevergreen (talkcontribs) 13:18, 27 April 2007 (UTC).

Pre-Development/Evidence

- I noticed in the editor files there are objects under a file "us" with files "sanfrancisco", "newyork", and "Route66." This suggests either that in the pre-development stages that it was planned as being the United States vs the Pan Asian Coalition, or perhaps that a new bp will include maps in north america. - - Perhaps we should have a section about it - - Xaritix 02:53, 28 April 2007 (UTC) - - I've seen this issue raised somewhere before, the general concesus was that it could mean anything, and that we cant put anything in the article without a proper source confirming something. Trottsky 14:19, 24 May 2007 (UTC) - - I remember some trivia thing saying it's the only one in the series without the US. Perhaps it could mention how there is some evidence suggesting that in early development, it was the United States instead of EU - - Xaritix 00:36, 29 May 2007 (UTC) - - Still only speculation -- until DICE/EA confirm something, let's leave it for now. Poss 01:17, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Music

There is a lot of orchestral-ish music in the game. Perhaps we should have a section on it, if anyone has any info on it

questions on bf2142 expansion sets

1. Is Northern Strike available is stores? In a box? Or can you just order it online and then d/l it?
2. Has Dice/ea mentioned or hinted at further expansion sets to bf2142, as it was done with bf2?
3. On 18 January 2007, Electronic Arts announced that they would release the Northern Strike booster pack for the Battlefield 2142 game, which was released on 8 March 2007. The booster pack contains ten new unlocks, three new maps, two new vehicles, and a new game mode called Assault Lines. Additionally, Electronic Arts has only announced the booster pack being available via the EA Link for $10.00 USD instead of being available from a retail store. Northern Strike is available for download as of April 2nd 2007.''
The text in the main article gives me the impression that there were two different expansion sets released, one on 3/8 and one on 4/2. What gives? --h_a 14:13, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

EA Games advertises Northern Strike, and I quote, "Available for download on EA Link". I don't know whether this is an alternative to buying northern strike.203.27.231.250 03:12, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

ok, i can answer this one. 1. Norther Strike must be dowloaded through EA, however apparentley in the UK you can buy an empty box with a download code for the same price...i guess this is helpful for those who distrust EA or dont have a credit card, but you still need to download it. 2. I havent heard of any more expansion packs, and there definatley hasnt been any mention on their websites about it. fingers crossed though. 3. The correct release date was 8th of March (the day after the anniversary of the bridge at remagen by the way). I dont know where that april date came from, i was definatley able to play on the 8th of March and it was available for preload before that. Also, with the 1.2 patch which came out about the same time as the preload, all unlocks were available with field upgrades (you lose them when you leave the server).Trottsky 17:25, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

So you have to download it? do they charge you through credit card? how much is it to download and how large is it. Also, is there a 1.2 patch? i was aware only of 1.25.203.27.231.250 01:40, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Yep, download is the only way, i cant remember exactly but im pretty sure credit card payment is also the only way...but you could look at the EA website or check out EA link, that would tell you. I cant remember how large it is, i'll try and remember to check when i get home and ill get back to you, it was $9.99US. There is both a 1.2 patch and a 1.25, 1.2 came out a week before Northern Strike's release date but after pre-load was available, and 1.25 came out about 2 weeks ago. both patches were quite large. Trottsky 17:25, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

I tried to use the EA link but it says "not valid in you region" I live in Australia. What gives? User:203.27.231.250

I am (also) in Australia and had a lot of trouble accessing Northern Strike through EA Link - at first I received the same message (not valid in your region). Then it changed to "session had timed out - please login again", even though I was "logged in"! So this had me completely stumped for a while - but I could see that other people here had purchased it, so I kept looking around at EA Link - I even filled in their questionare/survey and explained my troubles but had no response from EA - I guess they don't read the responses :-). But then I "stumbled" across an entry screen (in EA Link) for entering credit card details (can't remember how this happened and I don't have access the EA Link here at work). But once I stumbled down this path, purchasing Northern Strike was easy - but EA definitely don't make using EA Link at all intuitive! I had previously unsuccessfully used EA Link to download the 1.2 patch - it didn't work for some reason, so I am less than impressed with EA Link!

I dont doubt you've had trouble, and i know i've had a lot of minor problems with EA in the past, but i cant say i ever had any trouble with the EA Link or NS. Trottsky 15:14, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

downloadable weapon info

With the "downloadable weapon' in the retail bonuses section, is it one of the existing unlocks like the Voss LAR or the Baur-HAR or is it completely unique to the game? What is it called? 203.27.231.250 03:20, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

it's a different gun, its a reskin of the scar 11--Manwithbrisk 20:05, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
It's not really a "downloadable weapon". If you check your files, the gun is already in the game when you install it. Therefore, everyone who plays this game has the gun on their computer. However, they just don't have access to it unless they got the unique Best Buy Preorder key and used it on the EA promotional website for entering the key and attatching it to the player's EA account. INFORMATION CENTER (TC) 22:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

yeah... im not too sure what im doing, but the SCAR reskin problem about being unable to get the original skin was fixed with the update that added the highway tampa map. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.17.232.136 (talk) 21:46, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

I know this has been said already but it hasn't been resolved and i think it should be included. 203.27.231.250 03:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Would it be possible to include a screenshot of the special assault rifle available to those who pre-ordered the game. The article makes mention how it blocks a good portion of the screen. Perhaps a screenshot could be included to illustrate this? PowderedToastMan

Yes, there is a picture on Bf2142fever.com. You'd have to ask the owner's permission though.Echo.brian 16:48, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

That's the weapon? The rocket launcher covers up more of the screen than that. I'd take that over the Voss L-AR any day. --Putmalk 02:09, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't have a problem with this because I have a widescreen, but most people play with a squarish screen (which I don't recommend, it's limited). This problem only occurs to people who use small screens. INFORMTION CENTER 02:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I've posted two screen shots. I'm just having problems sorting out what copyright etc I should use. Was looking at the Fair use one, but it said I couldn't use that one. I have two shots where everything in the screen in pixilated so all you get clear is the guns and the outlines + names. I would love to help make this a better article as I play it far to often and find it easy to knock up things like the rifle outlines. I think the story part of the article should be seorced somehow. I believe many people are wondering where that storyline came from exactly. I am very interested in it and would like to know.

--Xaritix 23:52, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

While I do agree, I noticed something interesting, EA's Battlefield 2142 website has changed the storyline in several locations. Which begs the question of whether or not the article should be changed to reflect it as such. Birdman1011395 19:18, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

unstable on vista

someone please mention that this game is highly unstable on windows vista, almost to the extent that you can barely play 2 rounds in a row without the game crashing

Only if there's a citable source stating this. My guess is you're just one user having a standalone problem. Also, please sign your posts.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 19:50, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

No, it's not just one users problem. It is highly unstable on vista but the extent to which it is I'm unsure of. Laconia 13:18, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it's very unstable, so much so that you need to run the game in administrator mode, else you can't play online at all (Punkbuster's fault). Also i emailed EA about the problem and they said too bad, this game was released before vista, so we don't offer any support for it besides telling you to re-install the game...

Are you sure? I run it fine on vista, my only problems not being related to the OS. (Interfearing problems, bad 7950 driver, etc.) I suppose you could call this a reason to be unstable on vista, but the driver is Nvidia's product, not Microsoft's. Vixwald 14:22, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

In any case none of this matters since there aren't any sources.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 14:36, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

This problem is really between the computer's user. My friend had problems with running this on Vista and with Punkbuster, kicking him every few minutes or so. Fortunately for him, I knew how to fix the problems he was experiencing. After that, he had no problems whatsoever and has played online without crashing ever since. Therefore, this problem is not due to Vista, it is due to your computer's setup. If you need help running your game on a Vista-based system or on how to get Punkbuster to work, don't hesitate in asking me for help. INFORMTION CENTER 02:17, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium and BF2142 works fine on my pc. Just a few lags in between game-play. Enough to handle so its not bad. Jaewonnie (talk) 00:28, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
