I'm not quite sure why that section about the possibility of these worms being used in a biological terror attack, it seems a little disconcerting to have this on the internet for no apparent reason, I'm probably just paranoid but still.......
- FWIW, they cannot be bred in a pertri dish. 213.196.204.162 (talk) 23:31, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Deadly or not?
editThe raccoon article's Diseases section claims that Baylisascaris procyonis is fairly harmless. This article claims that it is often deadly. The CDC doesn't really agree with the "often deadly" claim, but neither does it support a "mostly harmless" claim. (Five out of 25 known cases since 2003 have been fatal. A 20% death rate is neither "seldom" nor "common", IMO.)
More reading:
- Michigan DNR article on Baylisascaris procyonis
- Emerging Infectious Diseases article claiming four fatalities out of 11 known cases since 1984
- Pet Education article that seems intent on scaring people
Someone ought to give all of the above a good read, then thoroughly re-work the section.75.5.231.169 (talk) 20:13, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Video of infected animal
editIf anyone interested, check out this. This is supposedly "drunk squirrel", but in reality it is probably a victim of Baylisascaris spp. Cite of vet: "I found it pretty sad; I think the people thought it was drunk but it looks exactly like a parasite in the brain we see all the time in the squirrels called Baylisascaris spp. — raccoon roundworm; permanent brain damage, causes severe balance issues, automatic euthansia. The circling in one direction and loss of balance is classic. Poor guy; hope some put him out of his misery." Of course this is original research but maybe anyone have confirmed video of infected animal? This IMHO would add value to article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.77.220.122 (talk) 10:41, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
