Talk:Beano (dietary supplement)

Latest comment: 5 years ago by Graatch in topic re: beano containing invertase

I have changed some of the more dogmatic and unjustifiable statements contained in this article, but it is still an advert.--Anthony.bradbury 17:41, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

re: beano containing invertase

edit

I removed the section which said that Beano contains invertase. It does not, nor did the provided reference mention that it does. I will excerpt here the lone paragraph from the previously given reference which mentions Beano:

Page 140 α-Galactosides are a major constituent of plant seed walls and must often be degraded during seed germination. Thus, there are a variety of plant-derived α-galactosidases, mostly with neutral pH optima, that have been used or proposed for a variety of human, veterinary, and botanical applications. Beano ® (GlaxoSmithKline, London) or Bean-zyme ™ (Mikeska Products, Santa Barbara, CA) are commercially available products in the United States, derived from fungal extracts that are mixed with legume-containing food prior to consumption. These products are said to reduce the discomfort often associated with legume consumption by reducing the amount of undigested α-galactosides that reach the large intestine and are degraded by the microflora present there (http://www.bean-zyme. com). α-Galactosidases derived from coffee bean [26] or soybean [27] have been proposed for the conversion of B-blood group erythrocytes (by removal of the terminal α-galacto- sides from the B-blood group antigen, see Figure 7.1) into the universal donor type O erythrocytes. Similarly, removal of the xenoantigens, notably, α-galactoside-containing epitopes, from pig erythrocytes or pig organs has been proposed to allow the use of these components in humans [28]. The nutritive value of soybean meal can be improved by treatment with an α-galactosidase [29]. Downregulating the expression of α-galactosidase, on the other hand, has been demonstrated to enhance the freeze tolerance of petunia plants [30]. These are just a few of the many roles and proposed uses of α-galactosidases.

Invertase is mentioned in the text in several places but not in reference to Beano.

Isn't Beano just a brand name?

edit

As far as I can tell, Beano is just a brand-name for alpha galactosidase - at least there are other products that purport to be the same substance, "Bean-Zyme" being one of them. 129.55.27.4 20:23, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, even if that may be, individual brand names for the same thing deserve articles, so long as they were the original or have one of the biggest market shares. Both factors apply to this brand. -- Zanimum 19:00, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is this product only in the US, I've never seen it in UK stores.

Reference 2 is broken. "GlaxoSmithKline Completes the Purchase of Block Drug for $1.24 Billion -prnewswire - January 16, 2001" URL for http://www.cyperus.com/ is invalid. I am not sure how to fix references. It is broken here too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GlaxoSmithKline —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.191.154.211 (talk) 02:22, 1 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fixed in both locations. Thanks for the note. In this case I just googled the first few words of the title to find the new URL. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 03:45, 1 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reference 13 is broken. Morebeer.com removed the forums some time before January of 2018. A link via archive.org wayback machine can substitute. https://web.archive.org/web/20160918133856/http://forums.morebeer.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1224&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a --156.63.68.251 (talk) 19:24, 2 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not an instruction manual on beer browing

edit

The paragraph should be significantly altered so that it no longer reds like one, including removal of the absurd "caution" - not to Beano users, but home brewers. Ludicrous.

Generic form of Beano?

edit

If one does a web-search for "Is there a generic form of Beano?" you will see that there is some confusion as to whether or not there are generic forms of Beano. The main article should answer that question. Also, the main article should probably go into some detail explaining if a dietary supplement can infact be patented - and if by doing so it is no longer a dietary supplement but a drug. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.231.81.147 (talk) 00:27, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dosages

edit

Information on these would be helpful.   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 14:36, 23 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Interactions?

edit

It would be nice if there was any research included as to whether Beano interferes with phytochemicals in food, such as antioxidants. 5Q5 (talk) 18:33, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Calories?

edit

So, if digestive enzymes break raffinose down sooner than it otherwise would, does that adjust the calorie balance of beans that you actually absorb? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.90.204.42 (talk) 21:27, 26 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
