Space Elevator/Beanstalk

edit

I don't care if the text is at space elevator or at beanstalk, but pick one and have the other one redirect there. Don't split it into two pieces: use one article. RJFJR 15:48, May 20, 2005 (UTC)

For the last year, this article's redirected to Space Elevator, but is that appropriate? There are some 879,000 google results for "Jack and the Beanstalk", some 1,570,000 for "space elevator." There are 102,000 results for beanstalk+elevator, and only 910 results that contain beanstalk+"space elevator". Wouldn't it make more sense to delete this article or redirect it to Jack and the Beanstalk? It really doesn't seem like this word is used frequently at all, with reference to space elevators. There's the definitive list over at Talk:Space Elevator under naming.

If you check out "beanstalk space -jack" you get 100,000+ hits. A quick look through some of the hits shows that most of them are space elevator related.WolfKeeper 16:06, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

That does not change the fact that it is a cultural reference to the fairy tail that associates the term with the space elevator. Since the association does not exist in reverse (that is the article on space elevators does not contemplate the beanstalk or the reference) the redirect is inappropriate. The redirect should make sense to someone who knows nothing about either topic. If the association is something worth noting in Wikipedia (it might just be silly cultural trivia) then the correct way to deal with it is to redirect to jack and the beanstalk and then include a mention or see also link from there to space elevator. There is no obvious primary topic for this title

I moved the former history of this page to Talk:Beanstalk/Revision history, in order to clear the page and preserve that history for public view, before moving Beanstalk (disambiguation) to here.

From that one can see that contenders for "primary topic" include:

I see no consensus on what the primary topic is. In such cases the default is disambiguation. – wbm1058 (talk) 23:06, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
