Chemical roles
editThis article states that the reaction is a "catalytic hydrogenation" variant of the Birch reduction, but Birch is not catalytic. This article states that the alkyl/alkylamine is the reducing agent, but that's also not how Birch goes. And "its products" are based on whatever the reactants are, not intrinsic to the named reaction as far as I can tell. DMacks (talk) 16:10, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
- the link to reference one can be found in the external links section, it mentions the Benkeser modification in the context of a Birch reduction, it is unclear from your comment what the disputed facts are. V8rik (talk) 20:40, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
- DMacks seems to have a point - the reaction is not catalytic in any reagent and the amine is not a reductant. BTW, a search of Chem Abs shows that "Benkeser reaction" is barely ever used - 14 hits. But Benkeser did write up a prep for Org Syn., so we might include that. --Smokefoot (talk) 23:54, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for clearing it up and correcting the article, the offence was "catalytic" not "a modification of". Yes the reaction is pretty obscure but harmless. V8rik (talk) 19:22, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the cleanup! And yes, on re-reading, some of my original statements were poorly worded regarding which details were likely wrong. DMacks (talk) 19:45, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
