Old references

edit

I took out what looked like some old in-line citations that were in the format (I). If I was incorrect, then feel free to put them back. It looked like there were 3 and there had been 3 in-line citations added to the end of the paragraph and I couldn't see any other use for them. In general, there is no point tagging an article for both copy edit and expert attention, because there's no point copy editing content that is proposed to change. In this very technical article, there's not much a lay copy editor could do anyway. The only significant (maybe) thing I spotted was the use of "coordinate to" (rather than "coordinate with") in the lead. But a lay copy editor cannot tell whether this is a genuine usage error or standard phrasing for this technical concept, hence one cannot do anything anyway. Therefore I have removed the copy edit tag. --Stfg (talk) 12:43, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Equation of reaction

edit

I am not able to acces original literature, so I have not changed the following equation of reaction (second equation in the multistep synthesis of  ):

(C5H5)4Nb + 2 HCl + 0.5 O2) → [{C5H5)2NbCl}2O]Cl2 + 2 C5H6

Besides the uncommon broken coefficient at oxygen, the equation also lacks a balance of elements and should, as far as I can see, read like:

2 (C5H5)4Nb + 4 HCl + 0.5 O2) → [{C5H5)2NbCl}2O]Cl2 + 4 C5H6

Again, I am not able to go into the literature, so I only raise the inconsistency flag.T.vanschaik (talk) 20:36, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I dont think that the original sources are required for this arithmetic, even though it is tricky. I copied what we were working on from the niobocene dichloride talk page:
Install Cp's on Nb, reduce Nb(V) to Nb(IV)
NbCl5 + 5 NaC5H5 → 5 NaCl + (C5H5)4Nb + "C5H5"
Protonolysis of 2 Cp's per Nb, oxidize Nb(IV) back to Nb(V)
2 (C5H5)4Nb + 4 HCl + 0.5 O2 → [(C5H5)2NbCl]2OCl2 + 4 C5H6
Protonolysis of oxo (which stabilizes Nb(V)), re-reduce Nb(V) to Nb(IV).
[(C5H5)2NbCl]2OCl2 + SnCl2 + 2 HCl → 2 (C5H5)2NbCl2 + SnCl4 + H2O

Also FYI, from our Manual of Style:

"Avoid the use of <chem> and <math chem> markup notations ....Compounds and atoms in reactions should not be wikilinked. These links should be in the surrounding text."--Smokefoot (talk) 23:00, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
