editThere was a relatively recent article in The Plantsman (2014) arguing that in the field (rather than the herbarium) Mahonia napaulensis and Mahonia acanthfolia are clearly distinct, and less strongly that the various South Asian mahonias shouldn't all be sunk into Mahonia napaulensis.
