"Berlin State Library" or "State Library of Berlin"
editI am wondering whether the name of this library should be translated as "Berlin State Library" or "State Library of Berlin"? Which one is more accurate? --Neo-Jay 03:35, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Their English webpage translates it "Berlin State Library" on its first occurrence, but otherwise uses the German name Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin even in English. I would have just left the title in German myself, but otherwise I guess the current title is okay. Angr (talk) 06:41, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Many thanks. --Neo-Jay 06:51, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- "Berlin State Libary" is wrong. It is not the libray of the state Berlin, but the State Library in (or rather "at") Berlin, not of the city-state Berlin, but originally of the Prussian state, then the GDR, now of the "Foundation of Cultural Property of Prussia" or "Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation". So the only correct translation -- if we want to translatet it at all -- the Staatsbibliothek itself does not translate the title. The Berlin State library is the "Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB)" Berlin Central and Regional Library which is also a wrong translation. It not a regional library (Brandenburg has its own instutions) but the state library of Berlin. "Berlin State Library" should direct to that library, not the the Staatsbibliothek at Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. --L.Willms (talk) 21:14, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
- I found that the "Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz" translates themselves the name of the library as "Berlin State Library" as shown here, which I nevertheless consider to be wrong, but then let us keep the name of this article as it is... --L.Willms (talk) 21:48, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
Merge of Berlinka (seized German art)
editSee Talk:Berlinka (seized German art)#Merge.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 19:04, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- PP, you must be kidding. Or trying to make all references disappear. The articles may only be merged when the Poles have "merged" all of Berlinka (seized German art) back to Berlin. Or when Silesia has been merged back into Germany, whatever comes first. -- Matthead DisOuß 12:29, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- deleted merge tag, as it was deleted at Berlinka (seized German art) long ago. Sebastian scha. (talk) 19:34, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Complete Rewrite
editI finished a complete rewrite of this article from the Berlin State Museum and Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation websites: Added new sections, reorganized images, added infobox, updated collection stats, and handled the above Berlinka collection issue in a new section called "Legacies of the Past" with a new ref from Der Spiegel, thereby providing a balanced POV. Article should be close to B standards with additional outside references from sources not connected with the Library itself... Ultracobalt (talk) 03:37, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- It looks good. I think it's very close to B-status, but I've assessed it as C for now for a few reasons:
- The article relies really heavily on one single source (the Stabi's website); finding some other sources (histories of Berlin, other newspaper articles, eg) would broaden the coverage. If you have access to a library search engine (like JStor or LexisNexis), maybe a search for "Staatsbibliothek" in German dailies would bring up some interesting stuff.
- I'd like to see something on the administration, funding, and structure of the library. The article mentions that the Preußsicher Kulturbesitz is responsible for the holdings, or was in West Germany, but what is the structure of the library today? What is its budget, who is the director, how is the collection split between the two houses, etc.? Also, from a user's perspective certain things would be useful to include - is it a lending library, are the materials for on-site use only, who has access, and so on. The house on UdL is currently under construction, as well - there must be an article about that somewhere. What are they fixing, when will it be done, etc.?
- If possible, interior photos would be excellent.
- The lead should be a little more substantial, in my opinion.
- Here's a random article on a library that has received a B assessment: Seattle Central Library. While for obvious reasons that article focuses more on architecture than the Stabi article will want to, I still think it gives a good idea of the thoroughness, coverage, and diversity of sources desirable.
- I hope that helps! Good work, keep it up! Sindinero (talk) 07:49, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your review - it helped me a lot in writing some additional new articles. I'll get back to this one soon to address the points you made esp as the German article has been expanded with new photos that are available in Wikimedia Commons --- Ultracobalt (talk) 23:02, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
