My edits
editMy edits came about when trying to figure out where the Flute Quintet in G Major falls in Bernhard Romberg's works. The collection of John Wion's messages is the only online source I could find for that - a peer-reviewed source would probably be better. I also omitted opus 10 from the works list as Raychev doesn't seem to be sure about that one. Graham87 13:50, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Association with Ferdinand Ries
editRomberg was associated with Ferdinand Ries for a time around 1810 or so. They toured together through Europe and Russia. Ries wrote his cello sonatas for Romberg. Stylistically, Ries was not that different from Beethoven, so Romberg's dismissal of Beethoven's style is puzzling, unless Romberg simply did not like Beethoven.
The following statement needs clarification:
Together with his cousin, he later joined the court orchestra of the Prince Elector Archbishop of Cologne in Bonn (conducted by the Kapellmeister Andrea Luchesi) in 1790, where they met the young Beethoven. Beethoven admired and respected Bernhard Romberg as a musician. However, Romberg had difficulty understanding some of Beethoven's musical ideas, and rejected Beethoven's offer of a cello concerto for him, saying that he primarily performed his own compositions[1]
This implies the 20 year old Beethoven was offering to write a cello concerto, which is unlikely. The Bonn court orchestra was disbanded only a couple of years later, the concerto offer would have been many years later, in Vienna. In 1790, Beethoven's musical ideas were still fairly pedestrian. I would sign this but Wiki does not like who I am. I mention this to remind Wiki and its editors they should do a better job in more controversial areas.

- Thanks for your comments. So in other words, you're a former banned user? Interesting. For what it's worth, the source says: "The young Beethoven deeply respected and admired Romberg as a musician. Unfortunately, the cellist did not fully appreciate the music of his friend and had difficulty grasping some of his musical ideas. When Beethoven wanted to write a cello concerto for Romberg, the cellist rejected the offer, declaring that he performed primarily his own compositions." This is on page 21; the footnotes there may clarify things, but I don't have access to them. Graham87 01:39, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
- The German Wikipedia page for Romberg says that there's no evidence for this anecdote. The dissertation cited here itself does not back up this statement with any citations. I'm inclined to delete the statement altogether. Junggai (talk) 14:10, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Junggai: Thanks for that. See my subsequent edit though. Graham87 04:51, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
- I appreciate the help with fixing the citation. I tried not to lose any info, but my wiki citation skills don't go that far. Junggai (talk) 09:33, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
