Biased

edit

It seems that this article may be overly charitable to Cochran to the extent that implies his differences with the SWP emanated from opposition to sectarian abstentionism of the leadership line. While Cochran may have indeed criticized dogmatism and sectarianism, evidence suggests that he and his group were in fact in essence themselves abstentionists retreating from political struggle and organized activism in the wake of the repression of the McCarthy period. At least this is what this writer was told in 1976 by Vincent Copeland, a member of the SWP at the time as part of the tendency led by him and Sam Marcy that later formed Workers World Party: that while they found little to disagree with politically with Pablo and his European cothinkers, they found the Cochran group's retreat from political struggle discouraging and did not agree with it, considering that their linking with Pablo was a convenient pretext for them to escape from what they considered a difficult situation.
