editI have been able to find this article confirming that Purnell was the mayor of Geelong: http://adbonline.anu.edu.au/biogs/A150448b.htm. The article also connects him to a sports figure, which lends credence (but hardly confirmation) of his involvement in sports. Regardless, this might be regarded as sufficiently notable. I am the creator of the page on Bervin Purnell. I researched the detail on his sporting career with Geelong Guild Athletic Club and through its minutes books provide the detail for the Wikipedia entry. The City of Greater Geelong and/or the Geelong Heritage Centre should be able to confirm his status as a former Councillor and Mayor of the City of Geelong.
Bervin Purnell's family history can be found in a book held by the Geelong Heritage Centre and date information (births etc) was also obtained through the State Library of Victoria digger data base for Victorian Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Purnell appeared often in the pages of the Geelong Advertiser most connected with Russell Mockridge's efforts with the 1952 Australian Olympic Team. Purnell was also closely associated with John Landy.
I dont believe that just because material cannot be found through an internet or web search of an individual that the article referring to that individual should be removed.
My intention in posting the article of Bervin E. Purnell was to provide historical data on a person who was both a Mayor of Geelong and a prominent figure in the major athletic club in the same city. The information should be considered important to Geelong, if not to anyone else.
I can add the original source of information once i obtain it. However, as i am new to Wikipedia, i am not altogether quite sure as to how i submit links etc to those reference sources. I can add my sources here if someone else would help me link them, rather than remove the article. Thankyou.
