Importance
editI'm glad to see some non-Christian religious buildings in Edmononton are making it onto WP, however, just because the buildgin exists doesn't make it notable. This isn't the only synagogue in Edmonton, it's not the oldest... it is the biggest? What makes it notable, and are there SOURCES to verify it? --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 22:55, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's over 100 years old, almost as old as the city of Edmonton itself, which was incorporated in 1904. Which synagogues in Edmonton are older? Jayjg (talk) 02:33, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- I was refering to the building rather than the congragation. A history of the congregation would be most welcome, but would still need to be sourced properly. The building is of limited notability. --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 20:32, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, I see the confusion. This synagogue article, as with all the synagogue articles I write, is about the congregation, not just about the current building it occupies. Unfortunately, there is no infobox unique to congregations, so the one used has to do. Jayjg (talk) 00:59, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I've added a picture I took a couple of years back when I was doing some other photography in the area for Wikipedia articles. Historically, the congregation used to occupy a building on 102 Avenue at, IIRC, 119 Street. The move out to Oleskiw is a recent development. As to some aspect of notability, a former coworker who was converting to Judaism mentioned once that each of the synagogues in Edmonton belongs to a different branch of the Jewish faith. I'd need a readily verifiable source for this before I'd put it into the article, but it is a start in expanding this article to show why Beth Israel is unique.Johntwrl (talk) 03:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Notable People
editAre there any important Edmontonians associated with Beth Israel? For example, notable politicians, sports figures, musicians, artists, and the like.
We've done this with a couple of other buildings in Edmonton, including a couple of churches. It's something that could help flesh out the article a bit.

When I was doing some reading on the Beth Israel web site, I came across a number of references to Joe Shocter. It's a bit of an assumption on my part, but I'm guessing this is the same Joe Shocter who founded the Citadel Theatre. Johntwrl (talk) 22:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Talmud Torah
editThe historical material on the Beth Israel web site mentions the founding of a Talmud Torah school for the Edmonton Hebrew Association's five children. Would this be the forerunner of Edmonton's Talmud Torah school located in the Callingwood neighbourhood?
