Gleason's bevel gear planer
editMention of Gleason's bevel gear planer development was just moved from here to Planer (metalworking). From a metalworking industry perspective, it is much more apt to have it here than there. I do realize, though, that it was floating randomly here, in a spot where it was a total non sequitur. The best way to cover it is to have a history section here that sketches major developments (Gleason's first planer, milling and hobbing developments, the coming of hypoids ca 1920s). If I get enough "free time" soon (ha), I'll do this. — ¾-10 01:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- I was attempting to move that blurb here in some logical way when I realized that there's not enough to that little blurb to even bother with. It was one sentence about Gleason's bevel gear planer, one sentence about the tooth geometry of bevel gears, and one sentence about keying or pinning a gear to its shaft. In short, a couple of random scraps. As far as the history bit goes, it's more misleading than not to even keep the Gleason sentence here, because that machine was just one point along the timeline of gear cutting technology (i.e., it's not like Gleason invented the bevel gear, which is what that one sentence in isolation would seem to imply if inserted here). A glance at Woodbury's History of the Gear-Cutting Machine (1972 [1958]) makes one realize that until we beef up the article "Gear cutting" with a general overview sketch that includes much more than just Gleason, there's no good way to even broach the subject. So in sum, those random scraps go to the scrap pile for now. — ¾-10 18:07, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

However, the source may not be reliable, and on reading it, the removed content also appears to have been copyright infringing.

Wrong rotation direction in figure
editon the left half of the figure https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beve_gear_schematic.png depicting a pair of bevel gears with a right angle between their axes of rotation, one of the depicted rotation directions needs to be reversed. The right half of the figure is correct.CharlesHBennettW (talk) 03:35, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
