Spanish twist label shot ??? :-)
editTakes me just a few minutes to add it. Stephan KŒNIG 13:10, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- If you have a scan of the label, please go ahead. 23skidoo 15:36, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
Capital letters...
edit...I think it's better to write, seeing you wrote the others with them, the others too :-) I just corrected some mispellings and incomplete titles :-). See you later, alligator! Stephan KŒNIG 17:24, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- I made some corrections. The word "and" is not capitalized in a title unless it's the first or last word. Also it's "Bill Haley with Haley's Comets" not "Bill Haley's" with Haley's Comets. I removed the label name information as that's not really necessary for this part of the list. Also at no time in his life did Rudy Pompilli ever use the spelling Rudi on his first name. 23skidoo 18:13, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- "Bill Haley with Haley's: quite perfect: it was mistyped by myself :-)
- "not really necessary": ok, no problem
- I'm sure all the words must be capitalized... Stephan KŒNIG 11:53, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm a newspaper and book editor. Trust me, not all words are capitalized in English titles. 23skidoo 14:45, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, no problem, my dear :-) but in French it is so/like that :-) Stephan KŒNIG 18:28, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm a newspaper and book editor. Trust me, not all words are capitalized in English titles. 23skidoo 14:45, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Rock the joint / New rock the joint
editI told you a few days ago this song firstly appeared as "Rock..." then issued in stereo as "New rock..." on a DECCA E.P.: want to get the reference? :-) Stephan KŒNIG 17:25, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- I just spoke to a friend who has the original MONO single: it was released as "New Rock the Joint". 23skidoo 12:44, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- The mono version was only called "Rock the joint", then renamed as New rock the joint for the stereo version only! I'm sure your friend has no good ears :-)
- planned concerts such as a fall 1980 tour of Germany, and proposed recording sessions in New York and Memphis were cancelled: Bill was signed again for a new concert in Liège in 1980 but died not long before... Stephan KŒNIG
- The mono version was only called "Rock the joint", then renamed as New rock the joint for the stereo version only! I'm sure your friend has no good ears :-)
:Rock the joint "1" = mono version; Rock the joint "2" = mono version as well and New rock the joint (retitled) = stereo version. My friend Terry and I have very good ears, indeed. S.K.
Rudy Pompilli
editAt no time did Rudy Pompilli ever use the spelling "Rudi" for his first name. (???)23skidoo 12:48, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Do you think so?
- No one knew about that fact: "R U D O L P H" "P O M P I L L I I" americanized his first name in "Rudy" (and written a little bit before as "Rudi" (DECCA Session 22nd.09.1955) OK? :-)"Rudi" was taken from the Bear Family annotations on the booklet (Decca Sessions, Sept. 22, 1955 then the used spelling of the Decca Sessions on March 12, 1956 was "Rudy") inside the 5 LP box set issued in 1981. Anyway, the ypsilon did not/still doesn't exist in Italian and the "X" and the "W" as well...
and the latter was only a mispelling!!! Stephan KŒNIG
- No, he was born Rudolph Clement Pompilii and Haley asked him to change the spelling to Pompilli because it would look like a printer's error. He was never known as "Rudi". Please see "The Sax That Rocked the World" by Chris Gardner (Now Dig This Issue 275, February 2006). 23skidoo 16:59, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sorry: I saw something like POMPI|||| (characters were too small). Therefore, no problem as POMPILII then re-written as POMPILLI which was based on a Bill's advice... 81.246.205.39 09:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC) (S.K.)

- Chris Gardner??? : a website full of mispellings (or mistypings???) "Stocking" instead of "Stockin'", I'm gonna dry every tear...instead of ev'ry, Ten gallon Stetson (With a hole in the crown): completely fanciful title!!! and so on...Deal me a hand I play the game anyway???
Stephan KŒNIG 18:07, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- Chris Gardner has responded to your comments at Talk:Bill Haley. Please don't try to convince me that Pompilli's first name was spelled anything other than Rudy or Rudolph. I've seen his funeral notice and Chris got his spelling directly from Rudy's birth certificate. So there is confirmation from both ends of the man's life. 23skidoo 22:04, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
::::Quite a pity instead of collaborating... 81.243.173.11 22:45, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Keep this up and I'll ban you again. Say what you like I have the proof from Pompilli's family. Try to find a source that tops that one. Any use of Rudi is an error. Prove me wrong. 23skidoo 23:05, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Bear Family annotations in the 5 LP box-set...(1981) Pfffff.
Bill Haley in Mexico
editThe Whisky a go go LP was released under the name Bill Haley and His Comets (Mr. Go Go/live) then issued in the UK on EMBER in 1969. Not 1968!!!
- However, it's very strange. The (C) on that LP was 1969 but issued earlier in June 1968. I'm still holding that LP like a true Haley fan. Surfrider1962 (talk) 15:50, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Big Al Thompson = ...
edita.k.a. Albert Scholz...S.K. (always the same nunskull) :-) who was related as the brother of Hank Thompson but the latter was NOT the singer of Honky Tonk Angels...
Twist español and Spanish twist...
editThe original version sung in Spanish was released in May 1961 and the English one in September 1961...as a "favor to the Organization" (sic). 81.244.186.196 21:15, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know about the favor bit, but you're correct that I have the recording order backwards. Will fix. 23skidoo 21:33, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Anyway, I am quite sure! No filthy garbage, my dear. By request of mafioso Vito Genovese. Bill was completely unable to pay the maffia back (IRS on his back for 140.000 USD. At a certain time, Franny Beecher quits the band without to have been paid. Then Billy Williamson, in his turn, throws in the sponge... Stephan KŒNIG 12:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- I know Haley got himself involved with the Mob in the early 60s, but unfortunately something like this needs a reputable source in order to be included in the article. Interesting stuff, though. 23skidoo 15:29, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
DIM and Maya labels
editWhat about Spanish labels DIM and Maya ??? Stephan KŒNIG 20:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- DIM is Dimsa, while Maya was a reissue label. Haley never actually recorded for either; they just re-released recordings made for Orfeon (and also Decca and Sonet). If we were to list all the re-issue labels, there would be hundreds. 23skidoo 13:16, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Seeking confirmation that John Lane has died
editIf anyone with this on their watchlist has heard any news reports that John "Bam-Bam" Lane died on Feb. 18 (he ran one of the post-Haley editions of the Comets), please note it here. I'm seeking confirmation of this news before I put it into the article. 23skidoo 19:54, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Album articles need images
editNoting that Elvis, Chuck Berry and other contemporaries have articles about their individual record albums, I have started a series of articles on the album releases by the Comets. These articles need album cover images. I no longer submit images to Wikipedia, so someone else will need to do this. Please ensure any images are probably cited for fair use otherwise they'll just get deleted. 23skidoo 16:46, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Bill Haley and the Comets.jpg
editImage:Bill Haley and the Comets.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Amazon review as source
editAs I understand WP:CITE, non-professoinal online sources such as the IMDb and Amazon reviews are not allowed as sources for citing facts in an article. In particular, I have removed a statement, sourced by an Amazon review, that stated that Freed and others began playing Rock Around the Clock because of the success of Shake Rattle and Roll and Dim Dim the Lights. None of my printed reference works nor my direct contacts related to Haley (yeah, yeah, WP:NOR) support this. The interest in Rock Around the Clock, as indicated in the new Rock n' Roll is Born documentary, came from Blackboard Jungle using it. Before that, it was seen as a failed single no different than, say, Haley's earlier failed single "Straight Jacket". 23skidoo (talk) 12:19, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Improvement
editI think the add of Bill Haley's ultimate LP released by Sonet on its budget label EUROPA, Germany, 1980 is a good one. This vinyl LP is practically unknown but I can tell everyone I bought it in March 1981 along with the 1979 Sonet other LP. I don't know if it was only issued in Germany. No traces in other countries. Surfrider1962 (talk) 16:04, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I disagree and have removed it. The list is not intended for compilations -- otherwise there would be hundreds of titles listed -- unless said compilations include previously unreleased recordings. The Europa release would have no new Haley material because Bill Haley made no recordings in 1978 (which was after he had retired and before he returned to touring and recording in 1979) and 1980, when except for a tour of South Africa he was mostly in and out of hospital because of his illness. The fact there may be other recordings by others doesn't count because this list is supposed to be for Bill Haley & The Comets, not other artists. Wikipedia has a tendency to frown upon these kinds of lists, so we need to be very strict as to the criteria, otherwise someone could come along and in good faith remove the lot.23skidoo (talk) 14:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- The question is: where these Sonet budget label EUROPA songs are from? A few months ago, Klaus Kettner (owner of Hydra Records) told me the songs were coming from Dave Miller's catalogue. Anyway, all the songs cut by Haley are new versions. I've never heard them on any other LPs...
- The Air Mail: the said LP "RATC" includes 4 instr. tracks without Haley playing on them. (info from Klaus). Surfrider1962 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 13:19, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
UK 1979
editTo add further information of the 1979 UK dates. I played guitar and vocals in his Cambridge UK date back then as support to a successful show as Flash Dave and the Thunderbolts. The venue was the Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall Cambridge UK( 5000 seats) on November 24th 1979. I have posters and press cuttings to support this. Musictada (talk) 19:39, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Discography
editThe discography is terribly cluttered, confusing, and needs an overhaul. There is a section for single releases, which is nice and neat, but it has no dates and chart positions. The chart position section is miserable. They should combined, or at least fixed. Cashbox seems unnecessary, and the dates are for charting and not release. This discography is one of the worst on wikipedia. 24.0.60.105 (talk) 09:15, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Rock Around the Clock Scandal
editI removed the following:
Rock Around The Clock Scandal
editAt one point when Bill Haley & His Comets were performing Rock Around the Clock live an incident occurred when a bunch of fans started going crazy and even going up on stage and throwing a bunch of instruments around. This was because Rock Around the Clock was supposed to be about the World Ending which a lot of people in the newer generation didn't realize. During the incident Bill Haley jumped off stage and ran off. The Rock Around the Clock Scandal is one of The Top 100 Music Scandals in music history.
I have read quite a bit of the history of rock and roll and I have never heard of this. I also did a Google search on "Rock Around Clock Scandal" with no results.

There were some riots during a couple of performances in Germany in the 50s, the first rock and roll performances in the country. http://www.rttnews.com/Media/SlideShow/SlideShow.aspx?ID=209&Slide=4 "In 1958 Bill and the Comets toured Germany, another major sensation, with full scale riots at the Berlin and Essen shows." http://thegardnerfamily.org/haley/gallery/1955-1958.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by BDUAres (talk • contribs) 13:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Additional citations
editWhy, what, where, and how does this article need additional citations for verification? Hyacinth (talk) 10:35, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- The tag was added in April 2009 when the article had no more than a single ref. [1]. I suppose it could be removed now. --Thrissel (talk) 12:52, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Deep Impact section
editAnonymous user 118.136.31.183 has plagiarized the copy from the Deep Impact page and linked the headline, both of which are no-no's. User 118.136.31.183: either re-write this with a direction directly based on the Comets of leave it out of here. I'll welcome other thoughts here before removing the section outright. --Stlamanda (talk) 01:50, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, since there are no objections I am removing this outright. It belongs in that Wiki page, not this one. --Stlamanda (talk) 14:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
Move to Bill Haley and his Comets?
editWith a lowercase H for "his". In common with logic (cf. "and the Comets") and several record sleeves, not to mention the "IN PERSON" ad pictured in the article. Rothorpe (talk) 19:44, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- I agree that the article should use "and", but "His" should still be capitalized, per correct capitalization rules. Hence the correct article title is Bill Haley and His Comets. 24.149.45.52 (talk) 03:35, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

"&" vs "and"
editIt's clear that "Bill Haley and His Comets" is more accurate and common than "Bill Haley & His Comets". Should not the page be moved to reflect this?24.235.74.199 (talk) 18:43, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- I don't know enough to say one way or the other, but I'll note that Bill's official website uses "Bill Haley & His Comets" (here) For whatever that is worth. Matt Deres (talk) 12:58, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
