City or Town?

edit

I've seen it listed as a town elsewhere, but I can't confirm it either way. Conrad1on 14:05, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Etymology

edit

No source is cited for the etymology of the name Bingen. Whether it means "rift" or "rock" or "hole in the rock" should be supported by listing the putative language (e.g. Irish Gaelic, Gallic, Breton, *P-Celtic, *Q-Celtic, or *Proto-Celtic), whether real or hypothetical, and the linguist/historian making the proposal.

Furthermore, because of the controversial nature of the claim, it really should not be listed in the article header. The header functions to give an overview of the subject, not to present potentially contentious information that is not established fact. Discussion of etymology should be placed into its own section either under the title "history" (e.g. Monaco, Treviso, Turin, Sidon), or with the title "toponyms" (e.g. Istanbul, Paris, Geneva, Dublin); or if the etymology is uncertain under the title "name" (e.g. Bern, Ljubljana), or the most explicit title "etymology" (e.g. Rome, Smyrna, Berlin). Bingen is cited as birth place of Hildegard of Bingen Please fact check this

edit

In the article Bingen is cited as the birth place of Hildegard of Bingen. But other sources state that she was born in Bermersheim von der Hoehe. Please fact check this.
