Historically, both spellings have been used in Memphis. There was, in fact, a lawsuit in the mid-twentieth century over spelling: the blue-collar workers in the segregated Caucasion western portion of Binghampton spelled it differently than the African-American community in the eastern portion. When the city government attempted to standardize the spelling, suit was filed to prevent it. I do not know by whom, or which faction preferred which spelling. My source is oral, but she says the info is documentable via the Memphis Commercial Appeal. I have intended for years to verify and ref, but if someone beats me to it, that would be fine with me.
