Notable Alumni

I have removed Jay Dormer from the notable alumni, as there is insufficient material on the net to make the entry suffice for "notable." Also, the wiki page set up was deleted for a similar reason by the admin team. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.81.70.112 (talk) 16:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: UCE Birmingham

In accordance with WP:GUS, I have migrated the userbox associated with this category to my namespace. It can now be found at User:DWaterson/Userboxes/User UCE Birmingham if anyone wishes to use it. DWaterson 02:38, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Timrollpickering 22:38, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Ranking table for Birmingham City is wrong. I understand some it's mentioned rankings are of Aston University. I wonder why is it done so as to mislead people. It's just so awful. I thought Wikipedia would a source I can depend, not anymore. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.110.121.76 (talk) 14:47, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

South Birmingham College?

I'm confused - South Birmingham College ( formerly Hall Green Technical College ) is still going strong, and is definitely not a part of UCE. Or does this refer to a different entity? If so I'd like to clarify. Mawhin 11:09, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

It is referring to the link with the old polytechnic. The current structure is different.

Rebranding

The university is now officially known as The University of Central England in Birmingham. There is also a new logo. The page (and links to/from it) need updating to this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.194.16.60 (talk) 02:53, 10 May 2007 (UTC).

The new logo was rolled out at the end of 2006. Their own website calls it UCE Birmingham. University of Central England in Birmingham is an inaccurate name anyway, as they dont have any locations outside of Birmingham. So as they themselves call it UCE Birmingham, that must be its name. Also, everyone simply calls it UCE, so UCE Birmingham is more recognizable. --r-c-h-w 20:54, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Er, the official name is the University of Central England in Birmingham, as approved by the Privy Council on 16 June 1992, in accordance with the powers granted by the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. However, the university can trade under any brand name it wants; this has been recently UCE Birmingham, but now apparently has changed again to University of Central England Birmingham, at least that's the way it's been rendered on the logo now shown on the front page of http://www.uce.ac.uk/ , as a modification to the UCE Birmingham logo. In terms of this article, UCE Birmingham is not the official name of the university, nor is it now, apparently, the name the university itself is using. Would a requested move be appropriate? Cheers, DWaterson 21:43, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm unsure about moving this. Logo at uce.ac.uk says "UCE Birmingham". Page title of their homepage says "UCE Birmingham". Text-only version of their website is inconsistent, but only uses "UCE Birmingham" and "UCE". If they've recently rebranded, I can't see it. — mholland (talk) 22:58, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
The thing is the logo you cite used to only say "UCE Birmingham" without the smaller text "University of Central England" above. However, AFAIK this hasn't been adopted widely and, as a student, I must admit I haven't received any formal notification of a rebranding or suchlike that I can remember. In that case, perhaps we should just leave the article where it is for the time being. Cheers, DWaterson 23:24, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Fair point about the logo. Currently redirecting to here are University of Central England, Central England University and University of Central England in Birmingham (from where this page was moved a little over a year ago). Do you know of any other common forms there should be a redirect from? — mholland (talk) 23:35, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
I can't think of any other useful redirects offhand. The funny thing about all this is that the university is currently considering (yet) another rebrand, even before this one has been clearly established (if it has actually taken place at all - I must admit I'm somewhat lost). Unfortunately I can't find a suitable reference - most of the debate I've read has been via Facebook, but current proposed names include "Birmingham City University", "Birmingham Central University" and "Birmingham Metropolitan University". We might end up moving this article all over the place if the name doesn't settle down for a while! Cheers, DWaterson 00:57, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

New university name

The university is to be renamed the Birmingham Metropolitan University. It should be revealed publicly within the next few days, maybe a little longer, so prepare for name changes in the article and the addition of info about this. - Erebus555 16:53, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Its not going to be Metropolitian, i can't reveal which one the university will be but it will be unveiled very soon anyway :) trash80 10:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering, because of the various confusions about the name would it be better to have a new article when the university changes it's name, reverting this article to a historical one? trash80 13:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

The rename is just a marketing exercise. We should move this article to the new name and repoint all of the redirects (see above) appropriately. — mholland (talk) 15:48, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
OK just seems we are getting buried in redirects *grin* trash80 17:06, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
OK, so I made a right royal cock up with that comment. I've heard that it will be Birmingham City University - apparently emails have been sent to the students saying so. - Erebus555 21:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Birmingham Polytechnic

I hope people don't mind but i had quite a bit of material for a Birmingham Polytechnic page which didn't really fit on the UCE one so i created a new page and took some of the stuff on the Poly off the UCE page to put on the poly one. trash80 11:06, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Good idea. There's plenty enough material for a historical article. DWaterson 16:46, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
I think they are both related articles as Birmingham Polytechnic is a part of the history of Birmingham City University. They should be merged. 02:03, 26 December 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.169.46.150 (talk)

No i disagree, i think there should be a separate historical section for the poly trash80 (talk) 10:36, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

But this is the history of Birmingham City University, so I think the Birmingham Polytechnic should be merged with the BCU page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.169.46.150 (talk) 22:10, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
I disagree. Adding the history in full will clutter up the BCU article and would be best served separately. That will allow the Poly article to (hopefully) be further developed in future without fear of overlengthening the BCU article. trash80 (talk) 18:17, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I understand Trash80's concern, but I think it's appropriate for the polytechnic and university pages should be merged; they are, after all, the same institution. The other post-1992 universities don't have separate articles for when they were polytechnics. I've put up a mock-up at Talk:Birmingham City University/Birmingham Polytechnic sandbox of what the BCU article may look like if the polytechnic page was merged into it. Extraordinary Machine (talk) 14:30, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Ok doesn't look too bad. Go for it. --trash80 (talk) 08:59, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Done. Extraordinary Machine (talk) 20:40, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Good job! --trash80 (talk) 09:32, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Name Change: Redundant article?

This article has been set up to cover BCU - much of the information is the same as the UCE one (presumably it has just been copied), leaving much of the UCE article useless.Booglamay 08:01, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Ouch - this is almost a copy & paste move. Someone needs to merge the Birmingham City University article into this one, delete the BCU one and then move this one to that name. The history of the creation of this article is needed. Timrollpickering 09:33, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

New faculties?

I heard that the faculties were all changing around this year... for example, the Education faculty is now Education and Health. Does anyone know anything more about this? KillerKat (talk) 00:19, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Well officially they have changed already but some of the names have not been finalised last time i looked, Education has not merged with health, i believe its Education Law & Social Sciences but i am waiting for the official naming before i update the list as there have been some last minute changes! trash80 (talk) 10:08, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
OK got the list and updated, think its needs some work though, bit messy. trash80 (talk) 14:59, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
