Why do people keep changing the PNG image to a SVG image? The PNG image looks better, and in IE the SVG image is really crappy. ~K 19:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

SVGs are made of vectors, so they tend to scale better and are easier for people to edit later on if necessary. In some cases - but not all - they're smaller, as well. SVGs are especially good for line drawings like this one.

MediaWiki automatically renders a transparent PNG from the vectors, which is probably why it looked bad in Internet Explorer, which has issues with transparent PNGs....Scott⁵¹¹⁴ 19:18, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for responding so quickly. Since most people view this in IE, I'd like to change it back to a PNG. Do you have any comments?

On a completely different note, how does one edit the SVG image? I assume first I'd have to get my hands on the XML code. However, whenever I download the file from the Commons, it's a PNG file. ~K 19:31, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

You can edit the XML code manually in Notepad, but I find it's a lot easier to use a specialized editor. Inkscape is what I use, and it's free; but if you have Adobe Illustrator it supports SVG too, I've heard.

Under the PNG rendering on the Image: page on Commons is a link that will lead to the SVG version. Firefox 1.5 can handle SVG natively, so clicking this will bring up Firefox's rendering; you can just right click the link and pick "Save Link As" to save a local copy of the image.

On the whole, it seems that Wikimedia is shifting toward SVG when it's appropriate. I mainly work on highway-related articles, and we've converted nearly all of the U.S. road sign images to SVG, and they seem to be working beautifully so far. ...Scott⁵¹¹⁴ 19:58, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
