Ethnicity

My understanding is that Sykes is the daughter of a white mother and an African-American father, but that she was not aware of her paternity until fairly recently. I don't think therefore that she can be described as an "Aboriginal activist" or whatever without this being qualified in some way. Adam 22:13, 7 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

According to the the PDF listed on the article page,
The speculation that her father was an African-American soldier was the most constant story; on December 2, 1973, Patterson (her mother) even declares this to a reporter for the Brisbane Sunday Sun. She said that Sykes’s “father was a Negro soldier.... His name was Master Sergeant Robert Barkley of the US Army”
I don't think 1973 can be described as fairly recent.

How does the indigenous community see her however. Mudrooroo has a very similar thing going on. He's quite likely of an african rather than aboriginal father or grandfather or something. But he was raised believing himself to be aboriginal, and despite recent revelations the community accepts him as one. It would be pretty distorting to refer to him as not nyungah, even though he's probably not ethnically aboriginal. Sykes might not be ethnically aboriginal, but that don't mean she aint got mob.
