Dpp is the drosophila gene that is homologous to mammalian BMPs. By the way, I think this page is completely lacking. Dr Aaron 14:20, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Morphogenetic?

I could be wrong, but isn't the correct term "morphogenic", not "morphogenetic"? It would be great if someone knowledgable could confirm and make the necessary edits. Geebee2K (talk) 07:13, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

You are right. I've just been puzzling over the same thing.

"Morphogenic" is a term of art from developmental biology that means the creation of form. It has nothing to do with genetics (at least not directly) and BMP was originally Bone Morphogenic Protein (as recently as 2002 anyway), which makes sense. "Morphogenetic" makes no sense, but apparently the error has proliferated and is all but irrevocable. Trying googling both terms and you'll see the erroneous spelling has far surpassed the correct one, because the people using the term think everything is genetic. I can't believe this. But I think it's too late to do anything. Even Scott Gilbert's developmental biology textbook has listed it as "genetic" and I am sure he knows better. (I just looked.) I am due for surgery on 01-Feb-10 to have the 'bone morphogenic protien' used in reconstructing a botched left hip revision. The previous doctor used cadaver bone, without my knowledge or permission, and it has since totally dissolved and left the trochantner device and all the wire cables all loose and jagged in my left thigh. My new doctor is re-revising my hip, using this compound. I am confident in my doctor and feel this 'compound' is safe. I would like to hear any comments on this subject, especially anything negative I might need to hear.
