I'm pretty sure the expression is Brass Tax and refers to the smallest denomination in which taxes would be payed.

Which is why the phrase, "Getting down to brass tax," means getting down to the details. RWillwerth (talk • contribs) 14:52, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
