what was his PhD thesis? What was his main area of academic output? What, if any, is his scholarly work? What is its impact, how much has been cited? How many peer-reviewed papers did he write? How many academic non-fiction books did he write? What was their influence. How many PhD's did he supervise? In short, how much work of high academic rank did he actually do? What were the circumstances in his being appointed Professor, and why? Was being a 'native' Catholic during a time of transition for TCD a factor in his appointment? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.113.57.161 (talk) 12:46, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The guy was an alcoholic who undertook very little in the way of serious scholarly work. I understand that most of his "lectures" consisted of him reading poetry whilst hung over. As for his Catholicism, Trinity was undergoing change at the time of his appointment. He would not have been unique in that respect. Hanoi Road (talk) 23:03, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
He was probably a nice man, but if you stopped 1,000 people on Henry Street, how many would be able to quote a single line of his stuff? Unfortunately, the people who decide such things have put him on the leaving cert curriculum. He wouldn't have a Wikipedia article if he hadn't appeared on the Late Late a few times and become a car salesman. 194.125.71.51 (talk) 00:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
