Iraq quote

edit

I've removed this:

However, he has not limited his comments to these groups alone. A sample of his views can be seen from a story he wrote that appeared in the Sunday Independent of 11 April 2004:

  1. ^ O'Connor, Brendan (11 April 2004). "We should do 'a Rwanda' on Iraq". Sunday Independent. Retrieved 2008-05-22. {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help); Cite has empty unknown parameter: |coauthors= (help)

Describing the quote as "his views" is clearly untrue. It's a literary technique called sarcasm. Here's another sample from the same column: "We should let them at each other and not intervene and then when we feel bad about it afterwards, we should flagellate ourselves for our sins, and get the guilts about it in perhaps 10 years' time." jnestorius(talk) 00:13, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's a nickname ("Ballsy O'Connor) that he's been christened on politics.ie from the title of that unintentionally funny article he wrote calling on people to buy up property in 2008 when the Leeman Brothers went belly-up.Exiledone (talk) 16:32, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletions relating to section on Don't Feed the Gondolas and comments re Katy French

edit

Hi 86.43.176.94 - I recently made some changes to the article in the above areas but noticed that you had reverted these. I believe this was incorrect but wished to get your view before making any amendments.

The article originally described the TV show as short-lived. However, as the programme ran for four seasons I believe this is inaccurate and reworded it accordingly, also including a citation. The original article also indicated that O'Connor appeared on the programme, whereas he was actually one of the three principal performers. It seems as if you deleted these changes.

Further in the article I requested a source for the comment: "His writing has been described as shallow, bipolar and at times racist. Irish political magazine." The citation request seems to have been deleted.

Later I provided some contextual information about the death of the model, Katy French, with a relevant source. However, it appears as if you have deleted this.

Perhaps you can clarify why made the above changes. Thanks in advance Fbell74 (talk) 08:49, 13 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

The request for a Third Opinion made in reference to this request has been removed because Third Opinions, like all forms of mediated content dispute resolution at Wikipedia, require thorough discussion here on the article talk page as a prerequisite. If the other editor does not respond to your discussion request, consider the advice I give here. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 14:16, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I understand - it takes two to tango. I'll follow the steps you suggested and go from there. Thanks for the guidance Fbell74 (talk) 06:03, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request for discussion

edit

Recently you made changes to the article Brendan O'Connor (media personality), which involved deleting some additions that I had made. I believe the changes I made were valid and would be grateful if you can discuss them accordingly. Relevant sections:

  • "Who's in the House" and Don't Feed the Gondolas. In this section I added information about the length of time the show ran for and the fact that the subject was a principal member of the cast. A source was duly included. You deleted the edit.
  • Sunday Independent column. Here I requested a citation for the statement: "His writing has been described as shallow, bipolar and at times racist." However, you deleted this citation request.
  • Other. Finally, I included information relating to the death of an individual (Katy French) that the subject had written about. I feel this information is relevant to the article but you deleted it. I would be grateful if you can elaborate on your reasons for the above. Thank you Fbell74 (talk) 05:57, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
If an editor does not follow the WP:SIMPLE simple rules and fails to even provide an edit summary explaining their changes then it shows a distinct lack of goodfaith (also it means any delete is indistinguishable from vandalism).
If I were you I'd have restored the edits immediately.
I have restored part of your edits about Don't feed the Gondalas, it seemed odd to describe a 4 year run as "short lived".
I did not restore your citation about Katy French, the Irish Times article referenced if behind a paywall, the description of French is a bit long and the information about her can be read in her own article, and it doesn't help show he wrote about her frequently. (Might be worth adding that detail to the Katy French article though.) -- 109.77.155.209 (talk) 14:15, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
As for "shallow" etc, the whole section goes to showing that (albeit poorly and verbosely) listing various articles and opinions that indicate seemingly contradictory opinions. It only just barely rises above original research and I'd certainly prefer if it was more tightly written but overall I think the claims are adequately substantiated in the paragraphs that follow it. Maybe you could make it clearer and discuss here more specifically what you think that section needs to do to further back up those claims? -- 109.77.155.209 (talk) 14:22, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for having a look at this. I did think about just restoring the edits myself but could see it turning into a see-saw of insertions and deletions, considering how relatively innocuous my own edits were. Following the process suggested by Wikipedia seemed like the way to go. I understand your point about the Katy French article. On reflection it's probably more pertinent in the article about her, rather than in this one. Thanks for the heads up about the paywall.
Re the description of the subject's writing, the article states that the subject's writing had been described in a certain way and I thought that a source should be included to support this. (Who is it that described it in this way?) Fbell74 (talk) 07:22, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
