Edit warring to restore false redirect
editWith three successive unexplained reverts here, here, and here, User:Scope creep has insisted on restoring a false redirect. As I repeatedly explained, Brent Tully should not redirect to R. Brent Tully. The latter is an astronomer, but Brent Tully is also the name of a longtime journeyman professional hockey player. To clarify, I do not want this page to serve as a BLP of the hockey player. Rather, I want a search for "Brent Tully" to not automatically redirect to the astronomer's bio, as is now the case thanks to User:Scope creep's edit warring. - @NedFausa: Can you point me to your longtime journeyman professional hockey player article so I can take a look at it. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 23:24, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- @NedFausa: I can't seem to locate an article on an hockey player on Wikipedia called Tully.scope_creepTalk 23:29, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) @Scope creep: If this is to be believed, then Tully would pass the second point of WP:NHOCKEY, as he has 142 games played in the AHL and 258 games in the DEL. However, @NedFausa: we don't generally do these "non-automatic redirects" that you're suggesting. Either have a BLP here (which I think is easily done and justified) or else leave the redirect in place. Nole (chat·edits) 23:31, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- Nolelover That may be case, I can't locate any article that is a hockey player called Brent Tully. scope_creepTalk 23:35, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Scope creep: @Nolelover: This diff shows the impact of a false redirect on other Wikipedia pages. NedFausa (talk) 23:38, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Scope creep: Here are three URLs pointing to online pages about hockey player Brent Tully.
- But I repeat, I do not want this page to serve as a BLP of the hockey player. NedFausa (talk) 23:47, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- NedFausa, Your article doesn't exist, so by definition it is not a false redirect. On Wikipedia you get folk with the same names and there is various strategies to cope with it. The astronomer article is notable as is its the redirect. You can not change it. I would suggest you create an article on your hockey player. Please use the Afc draft article mechanism that I suggested on your talk page. Until the hockey article comes into exist, the link can't be put in place. If you can't create the article yourself, I would ask around with the folk who create these types of articles. There is a lot of them. Once it is created you use the dablink template to point the two articles to each as they face a common naming nomenclature. Hope that helps. scope_creepTalk 23:53, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah sorry scope, maybe I should have clarified--I didn't think at any point that Ned was talking about another, currently existing article, but I think we're all on the same page there now. Ned, scope is right though: the fact that people may accidentally link to R Brent Tully isn't by itself enough to change a redirect that, in a vacuum, would be correct. I think that Tully the hockey player is pretty clearly notable enough for an article, so I'm curious why you're against a BLP? I'd be willing to help you put that article together in a couple days if you want, but if you choose not to create a fully-fleshed out article about the hockey player, then I'm afraid the redirect here should stay. - @Nolelover: I appreciate your kind offer of help, but I know nothing about hockey and would have zilch to contribute to a BLP of Brent Tully. I will not pursue this matter further. NedFausa (talk) 00:53, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
- Completely up to you, but it's a lot less work than it seems (and you've already done half of it by finding some sources above!) to just start a little stub. I expect that, based on his career, I could spend a decent amount of time researching and the article would still end up looking a lot more like this and not this. Regardless, thanks for trying to sort this out in good faith. Nole (chat·edits) 01:07, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
