Talk:Bronze Medallion (New Zealand and Australia)

The requirements for the Bronze vary by lifesaving institution. For example, for Surf Life Saving in South Australia the current requirements are: a 800m timed swim (pool or surf), a timed run-swim-run with a 200m surf swim leg and 150m run legs, a theory exam, demonstrate CPR (increasingly including defibrillation), demonstrate radio, demonstrate flags, demonstrate lifts, demonstrate tube rescue of conscious and unconscious patient, demonstrate board rescue of conscious and unconscious patient. During these tests other factors are also evaluated (such as your ability to work as part of a team, your temperament under pressure, your initiative, your ability to recall and follow procedures, the soundness of your judgement). To retain the qualification each year the run-swim-run, CPR, tube rescues, board rescues and flags must be demonstrated again (this is called "the proficiencies" and if you hold other qualifications there are also annual proficiency tests of those). During normal beach patrol operations, patrols are randomly chosen to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a simulated rescue and first aid scenario. The required swim times are roughly what might be expected after a year of attendance at thrice-weekly training after entering a swim squad from "just finished learning, competent in all strokes" level. Older lifesavers tend to practice with Aussie Masters swim squads, those under 25 usually practice with competition squads. 150.101.30.44 (talk) 04:45, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
