MediaNews became the sole owner in 2009, by acquiring the E. W. Scripps' 50% ownership stake in parent company Prairie Mountain Publishing Co. At the time Prairie Mountain also owned the Akron News Reporter, Brush News-Tribune, Burlington Record, Estes Park Trail Gazette, Fort Morgan Times, Julesburg Advocate, Lamar Ledger and the Sterling Journal-Advocate. MediaNews' subsidiary The Denver Newspaper Agency also owned The Denver Post.
