editSomewhere, it said this structure contained an electricity sub-station. Elsewhere, it said that the public open space had been formed for the benefit of surrounding tenements - dividing the poor of Mayfair from the more prosperous. Don't have time to sort out these things at the moment. There are some images on the web that make this place look quite fascinating - so, maybe someone can add their own pix?
