Possible sources
editJust doing a quick newspaper.com search to see if there are sources that are usable for expansion. There are some fun-looking old ads, but too vertical to work well on the page. Much of what I find is just coverage of the latest sporting match. Items of note:
- 1865 ad:Forty Business Golleges
- 1889: B&S in 48 cities; Bryant controls only the Chicago school.
- 1924 editorial noting that B&S (among others) do not meet the legal definition of a "college".
Computer is doing some crashy thing, so I better save here. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 19:03, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- An 1871 first at the Chicago location. Cool 1912 ad, includes a logo. [1954 article on Buffalo location lists the many names it had operated under, why it had had to drop the "college" from the name for a while.] -- Nat Gertler (talk) 20:45, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Whoops, that last one was missing the link. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 13:27, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Bogus legal threat
editI am the latest recipient of a bogus legal threat supposedly sent by the legal department of the college. Despite the unsigned letter saying it was sent July 25th from Buffalo, the postage stamps and cancellation indicate that it was mailed from Europe, which seems quite an unlikely place for B&S to have their legal department. If the sender happens to be reading this board, let me suggest that blatantly fake legal threats that would not stand even the shallowest First Amendment scrutiny is not actually a way to get your edits done here. The correct way is to come up with policy-based arguments that gain you consensus in discussion. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 22:03, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- You may want to let the foundation's legal team know about this so they're aware of this harassment. ElKevbo (talk) 22:18, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- That is my next stop; I just took care of bringing it to WP:ANI. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 22:34, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nat--I have to ask, and of course will not be offended if you say no, but might you be willing to share a copy of the letter with any of your identifying information redacted? The topic is broadly relevant to my professional life. As I say, if not, no worries. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 23:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Drop me an email with more context, and I will respond as I feel appropriate. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 23:51, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Quick note to let other editors know that the bogus legal threats have continued. This person contacted my employer this morning claiming to represent the college. The message was clearly bogus but others should be aware that editing this article may result in off-wiki harassment. I have dropped a note at WP:ANI and requested that the involved sockpuppet be blocked but that is unlikely to stop the harassment. ElKevbo (talk) 22:18, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- And on a similar note, to make clear to anyone who find themselves in a similar situation that they ought not panic, I was emailed a faked letter promising to file a police report on me if I hadn't promised not to edit this article by a given deadline. That deadline passed early this week, I have made no such declaration (and have continued my presence here) and no police have become involved. I do not know the reason for this nonsense (perhaps someone wishes to cast the college in a false and damaging light by depicting them as making bumptious legal threats in order to cover up simple facts?) but it continues to be rather blatant. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 22:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks. In case anyone's wondering, further weeks have passed without the threatened cops showing up at my door, with no civil action, and zero reliable signs that the college themselves had anything to do with the ridiculous legal threats. Fear not, folks, it is but a paper tiger. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 21:17, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes thanks for the update. Thankfully, these sort of things seem pretty rare. Hard to imagine a motive. Just a troll? Or someone who cares so passionately about little minutia about a small upstate college? I do a fair amount of editing on Higher Ed college and honestly only know this particular college exists because a friend lived nearby to one of the branches many years ago. But just hard to imagine such passion around such a mundane and niche topic. Jjazz76 (talk) 22:39, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
