  • Burning Flipside -- Advertisement? Not encyclopedia article.
    • "Regional event" that is apparently very regional, with about only 100 Googles (the rest 400 are repeats). --Menchi 18:38 15 Jul 2003 (UTC)
    • I reformatted and gave this a slightly more encyclopedic tone. I'm doing more research on the event, but I've heard about it before -- it's important for Burning Man types. --ESP 19:07 15 Jul 2003 (UTC)
      • I've updated the article with additional information about the event. This is pretty much the best I could do. -- ESP 20:35 22 Jul 2003 (UTC)

This event has grown rapidly and is very important to the Burning Man community. Although it only has 1500 attendees to BM's ~35000+, it's culture has a major influence on that of the larger event. Additionally, it has grown rapidly in less than a decade from a <50 person campout to its current size and next year will be moving to more land to encourage more growth.

I will try to do what I can to this article when I have time to make it more presentable. I have many photos from the event, however it's against the guidelines of the event to use photos for any commercial applications. I don't know if this will jive with wikipedia -- although wikipedia is noncommercial, it's reusers might be (even if they just have banner ads). I need to research the use guidelines for photos here. Kit 08:37:00, 2005-08-06 (UTC)

Oh, and do note that "Burning Flipside" results in significantly more Google hits than it did when Menchi apparently tried it in 2003. Kit 23:57:44, 2005-08-07 (UTC)

Photography

The photos associated with "Images of the Burning of the Effigy: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/46438344@N03/collections/72157624078409857/>" are mine CaseBlack (talk) 16:05, 14 June 2010 (UTC), I hold full copyright. The copyright notice for these photos on Flickr carry an "Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs Creative Commons" licensing notice. I give permission to have these images available to users of this Wiki article consistent with the restraints established by the Flickr licensing notice. I will have to get special permission from the Flipside LLC to use one of my photos on this page, as it is not normally allowed to release them into the public domain where they can be used commercially. Hopefully they will let me release one of my pics with a free license in order to make this a better page. Kit 23:55:33, 2005-08-07 (UTC)

I sent the following to Flipside's media representative:
Hi I am a previous attendee of Burning Flipside. I also edit for Wikipedia. I would like to use 3 of my images on Wikipedia, however that requires releasing them into the public domain and allowing their potential commercial use. As this is normally against Flipside policy I wanted to contact you to get permission. The pictures I have selected are:
http://www.kitoconnell.com/gallery/flipside/flipside04/flipsideburn04/angel4.jpg.html
http://www.kitoconnell.com/gallery/flipside/flipside05/flipsideburn05/img_0661.jpg.html
http://www.kitoconnell.com/gallery/flipside/flipside05/artcar1.jpg.html
As you can see, there are no people visible in any of the 3 pictures, so there is no need to get any individual's permission for their use.
Thanks in advance,
Kit
I will update this page when I get a reply. See Talk:Burning Man for more information on the restrictions about using photos from Bman events. Kit 03:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
And I sent a followup clarification because the GFDL isn't exactly the public domain. Oops. Kit 03:32, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Since Austin Artistic Reconstruction LLC restricts commercial use of images, it is WP:NONFREE. Make sure your licenses are correct! Adding media would require a non-free use rationale. Not necessarily "permission". But it certainly cannot be given either GFDL or CC-BY-SA license. Spectre9 (talk) 04:07, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

see references that non-commercial use is restricted at "private event" per Austin Artistic Deconstruction, LLC. at <http://web.archive.org/web/20010908175028/www.burnaustin.org/history/archive/flipside99/survivalGuide.html>, <http://www.burningflipside.com/survivalguide2007.pdf, <http://www.burningflipside.com/survivalguide2008.pdf> Spectre9 (talk) 04:47, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Daily Texan article

edit

In general, Wikipedia needs documented sources such as newspaper articles. However, I have to question whether we really want to source the Daily Texan article on this page.

To begin with, the article got many facts wrong. For example the author thought that "through appropriate holes in an ear and a vagina painted onto a large sign one could get condoms and Q-Tips, respectively" when clearly had she looked into the ear or read the sign she would have know that earplugs were being given, not Q-Tips.

Moreover, Burning Flipside is not a media event and the concept of documenting the event through media runs counter to the concept of Flipside as a participant-only event.

Please respond with your comments. I'd like to hear everyone's point of view and after 5 days either remove the article's link or leave it be. SteveHopson 15:53, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Burning Man Regional Events Infobox

edit

I've started putting together an Infobox that can go on the Burning Man type events pages. When anyone has a few moments to look at the example I've put together, I'd appreciate any comments you might have. Thanks, and Burn On! SatyrTN (talk | contribs)

section added

edit

I've created a new section with a table showing basic facts and figures for each year of the event (patterned roughly after the Burning Man article), but I'm missing information on earlier years and may be mistaken on some details for later years. Have at it! adamrice 15:05, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
