(Two Dabs?)

edit

there appear to be two Button (disambiguations). I don't know how to fix this —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.213.29.2 (talk) 23:24, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Do you mean Button (disambiguation) & Buttons (disambiguation)? They may deserve merging.

    • A colleague asks in the "Removed entries" section whether merging is called for. As they stand now, i would not: IMO merging plural and singular works best when one form has only one or two entries, and can be stashed out of the way in the "See also" section (with the predominant form providing the title of the merged Dab page). IMO, the plural and singular titles of the pages in question are pretty clearly distinguished -- users will go to the right Dab without agonizing ("Button" to me doesn't sound like a nickname, but "Buttons" does), except in a few cases ("Button" as a title of a song, etc. is as good a guess or as likely fading recollection as "Buttons"), so helping them focus in on the right Dab from the start probably saves them time.
(The small size of The button seems to me not a strong enuf reason for merging, tho: to me the contrast between "button" and "the button" is much stronger that that between "button" and "buttons". But YMMV.)

Removed entries

edit

I removed the following, which need links/articles/sections to comply with MoSDab:

* A game involving a light tap upon another's nose, often as a show of affection
*"The button", a term used in combat sports to refer to contact with the jaw or chin, often rendering an opponent unconscious
* A game involving a light tap upon another's nose, often as a show of affection

If you disagree, pls make a case for whichever applies.

  • Three more probable cases of mistaking Button for a list that includes everything that has "button" in its name:
    * Button Islands, Nunavut, Canada
    * Button mushroom, a.k.a. agaricus bisporus
    * Belly button or tummy button, a.k.a. human navel
(Please note that [1] can list them without maintenance effort, but the dab cannot function while trying to duplicate that special page's purpose.)

I organized the entries, I don't have strong opinions about which entries should or should not be included. How about adding {{intitle|button}}? Should button and buttons be merged? Obankston (talk) 19:06, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I see that WP:MoSDab#"See also" section does mention {{intitle}}. I'm probably one of the worst editors to comment on when to use it, bcz i would not use it at all! (I oppose anything that dilutes the focus of Dabs as the means of getting as " paths leading to different articles which could, in principle, have the same title", per WP:Dab.) On the other hand, if the question is between putting back entries like the above, or using intitle, i admit that intitle is less harmful.
I'll comment on 1/2 Dabs in the #(Two Dabs?) secn above.

Note: buttons can close non-clothing objects, including bags and tents, and most anything that could be closed with a snap. Note: got any button-fly jeans? Steel button, attached without thread. ... and a thread loop can be used in place of a buttonhole!

I think we should include under games the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Button_(Reddit).
