Gengulphus
editWhere is the printed evidence that "Jingo" *originated* as an abbreviation of "Gengulphus"? (i.e. demonstrating that the meaning "Jesus" was only later attached to the word Jingo, and was not coined separately)?
The "Gengulphus" meaning appears to be a false etymology. Nobody cares much about Gengulphus now, and I doubt they ever did. It seems much more plausible that a J-word with two syllables was simply made up one day, to avoid saying Jesus. TooManyFingers (talk) 09:42, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
