downtime
The amount of downtime is becoming quite significant. A few occasions now when players unable to move within the online game for days on end. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.255.140.30 (talk) 20:58, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
- I've seen this but until a reliable source reports on it there's nothing to add. I also believe it may be a hacked server modification meant to grief players rather than an actual issue with IWNet. ferret (talk) 11:58, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- Possibly due to the lack of dedicated servers. UnknownThing (talk) 07:13, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
- Unrelated, as a dedicated server is nothing more than a client hosting a game without a local player. There is no fundamental difference in how the game is hosted by a "dedicated" server or a "listen" server. Anyways, I have personally not seen this occur again in the past week. ferret (talk) 12:10, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Plot Year
I put the year of the plot (2016) in the plot area so they will know what year it is. The Guitar Master (talk) 00:12, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
I See it has been removed but I say it should stay. It is true because in the first game in the flashback level Cpt. Price said that it had been a decade since Chernobyl that is 1996 the main plot takes place 15 years later which is in 2011 and 5 years from that is 2016 The Guitar Master (talk) 04:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
It was most likely removed because it was considered original research. llama lom (talk) 16:59, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Why Call of Duty: MW2 is 'NOT' a best-seller for the PC?
This section needs verification.* This section is created from data I have learned from personal experience and data from other players playing MW2.*
- There is a online multi-player cap of 24 persons(18 persons, don't know how to make grammar edits). This was a big downgrade from Call of Duty 4's 50 man capacity.
- PC performance requirements.
- Online hacking on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC version only). Majority of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 PC owners dislike the game because of hacking related issues.
- Inability for host to kick and players to vote kick hackers promotes online hacking.
- Inability to ban hackers promotes online hacking.
- There seems to never be any moderators to ban hackers from public games.
- Servers can be modded/hacked. Modded servers may feature special abilities such as Moon jump, Third-Person perspective, and maybe more.
- Large cheating community. http://www.callofdutyhacks.com/hacks.html
- Small legit non-cheating community. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/No-Cheaters
—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihasfail (talk • contribs) 11:37, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Steam Requirement. Once a cd-key is linked to an account it cannot be transferred nor can another account use the same cd-key. Steam account name or password recovery is not user friendly. One infamous issue is the pass-phrase issue where the use has to input the pass-phrase with the recovery code, however, if the user does not remember his/her pass-phrase or never created a pass-phrase then the account cannot be recovered. Contacting Activision Support Staff will only lead to an automated message which restates recovery instructions.
- Inability to create custom maps.
- Lack of PC Community Support. Developers pay no attention to MW2 PC forum section.
http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=24
- Horrible Review Ratings.
http://readerreviews.ign.com/rrobj/game/index/14280895
- This is 100% pure opinion and has no bearing what so ever on the number of copies sold, which is the metric used to determine "best selling." I'm sorry you don't like the game, I personally do, but none of this is relevant to the article or has anything to do with "best selling". On top of that, nearly everything you state except those pertaining to the peer-to-peer hosting affect almost every FPS with multiplayer. Also, unless something changed with the DLC last week, the player cap is 18, not 24. ferret (talk) 12:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a best-seller on the Xbox and PS3 versions. According to Gamasutra, the sales figure for MW2 for the Xbox was 4.2 million units; 1.9 million units for the PS3 version; but only a whooping 170,000 units for the PC version. I hope you can see that 170,000 units is a far ways from being a best-seller. I am TRYING to figure out why the PC version failed when MW2 ranked 1-2 on the 360 and PS3. I believe that this is a great marketing phenomenon and I also believe future developers can benefit from the mistakes of MW2.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4214/npd_behind_the_numbers_november_.php?page=4
- Unless you can provide some independent sources suggesting reasons for the lackluster sales there's not much to discuss here, so far all you have produced is original research, talk pages are for discussing the article, not it's subject. See WP:TALK. If you want to rant about this, try a forum. Rehevkor ✉ 14:49, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- The Gamasutra article you're referring to was only for November 2009 RETAIL sales. It does not include any sales since then, nor did it include STEAM sales. It only included brick-and-mortar sales. I found a Kotaku article referencing that same figure that quoted over 100,000 players online concurrently. While entirely speculative, that would mean about 60% of players who purchased the game were playing at the exact same time, which seems extremely high. The bottom line though is that the game did suffer a large backlash from the gaming community. My personal position is that it was largely unwarranted (And I know several people who were dead set opposed to it who now play MW2 exclusively on the PC). There's already mention of this in the article and in the companion article about controversies, however. Anything more is injecting personal bias. As a small note, there used to be a referenced paragraph in the Controversy article (Removed as not being a controversy though!) that listed MW2 as the highest pirated game of 2009, with several million downloads. The PC market is far more affected by pirating than the console markets. ferret (talk) 12:05, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Assistance in trimming down plot summary/improving plot summary
Somebody should point out in the plot summary that the motivation behind Gen. Shepherd's "betrayal" is not ever explained. Why he would kill two men whose loyalty to him and their country was beyond question is not exactly justified. Also strange is the fact that he murdered two Americans in front of a bunch of other American soldiers, and nobody questions it at all (or charges him with murder), and they cover it up for him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.76.48.242 (talk) 15:52, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
It has been brought to recent attention that the summary may be too long or overly detailed. However, after having read the summary's contents, I honestly could not find any other way to trim down the summary beyond the bare bones it already has. This calls for a fresh set of eyes for editing.Dibol (talk) 05:11, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
I think the summary could do without the step-by-step details, especially when describing the final fight scene. A few simple lines saying that McTavish and Price encounter Sheppard in hand-to-hand combat, with Sheppared dying and both men coming out injured could do (or something of that sort). There are other places where the minor details could be trimmed. If people wanted a play-by-play, they might as well just play the game. The current review score from the Official Xbox Magazine is incorrect. The UK magazine did give it at 10/10 (for reasons unclear to me), but the US version of the magazine awarded it a 9.5/10. Team chat slang.
Why is there no mention of "The Draycott" in this article? I hear it at least once a session over the team chat. It would make it easier for newbies to integrate into the Modern Warfare community if there was some sort of jargon buster.
The definition of the term "The Draycott" can be used in any type of match where the players deaths are 10 or higher than their kills, a 1:10 kill/death ratio.

- WP:NOT#DICT: "Wikipedia is not a dictionary, or a usage or jargon guide." See also WP:VGSCOPE. While easing newcomers into the game community is a noble goal. Wikipedia is not meant to be the place for that. Surely there is some external wiki with exactly that goal? In addition, the popularity of this term having increased in recent weeks is not sufficient for notability. Think more in terms of "in 10 years, will anybody need to know this term from an encyclopedia?" At least in this particular case, it is a little early to judge that. -- Nczempin (talk) 20:07, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
Neutrality
I'm quite worried that the tone of the text reads like a press statement. I've noticed this with quite a lot of movie / video game articles. It's just a lot of smooth talk, for example at the end: "The accolades heaped on the title weren't limited to gameplay, either – in June 2010, composers Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe were presented with the ASCAP Top Video Game Award for their work on Modern Warfare 2." Just seems to violate the objective style of description I expect from our Wikipedia.... 89.0.46.74 (talk) 08:15, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Controversy
Maybe it should be noted that due to the controversy in the level where the player needs to assist in the massacre at the airport, the player is warned in-game that this scene contains offending conduct. After this warning the player has the option to skip this level if he\she wishes, or continue if he\she will not be offended. Skipping the level does not involve any penalty regarding game completion.
Furthermore, maybe it should be noted the controversial level is called "No Russian". This name comes a quote by one of the characters in the beginning of the level, but I don't think that detail is important enough to be placed here.

- Hasn't it become a standard procedure for media to blame MMORPGS and first-person shooters anyways? Every time someones goes amok in Germany, the first thing media does is to dig for ego-shooters and blame them. Too bad so many people play this kind of games. I think we should be more worried about pants. Seriously, I am sure all serial killers and murderers of the last 100 years wore pants. Scary, huh? Sounds absurd? So does the supposedly connection with Moder Warfare, Half-life, Quake, Doom or whatever. Ok, rant mode off, I agree with Dbrodbeck, we should wait and see if the media still run with MW2 in a month or so, or if the company does react to this media coverage before including it here. --Mister Denial (talk) 22:41, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Quotations around names?
Why are there quotations around names, like Soap, Roach, and Ghost? I understand those aren't their real names, but why that warrants quotation marks is beyond me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.248.200.204 (talk) 04:27, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Because they are Pseudonyms.
I think it's a bit excessive to put quotations around every instance. It's accepted that MacTavish goes by Soap, so I think his name does not need to be put in quotes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.237.121.88 (talk) 07:12, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Carpet-bomb?
Hi.
Every time I visit this article, I see someone claimed that the U.S. wanted to carpet-bomb the WH in the plot section. I've never been able to confirm this. The nearest thing we have in the game is a radio transmission that says "Hammerdown is in effect." A plane does pass over the WH but it is an F-15E. Does anyone has a source that can confirm the exact word of "carpet-bomb"?

West Zampella dismissal
Hey, I looked the game up hoping to find followup on the dismissal of Jason West and Vince Zampella following the release of the game, but I find absolutely no mention of that in the article. I am not well informed on the subject, but there does seem to be information present in other articles such as Titansfall. As I understand it, though, there was a dispute over money West and Zampella claimed they were due over MW2, and eventually they were dismissed. This seems relevant to MW2 itself, so why is there no mention of it in either this article or the separate controversy article? If there is a rational reason I would love to hear it. I couldn't find any mention of it in the archives of this talk page. 82.0.16.12 (talk) 01:41, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

- The best I can offer is that it doesn't directly concern the game itself. While West and Zampella alleged issues with MW2 royalities, among other issues, it had no effect on the game itself, it's reception, or sales, or any connection to the content of the game, etc. -- ferret (talk) 18:10, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Sources
Who was the one responsible for choosing what sources to use? Mcleanlong11 (talk) 15:32, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- Us editors? -- ferret (talk) 15:42, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
Some of the sources seemed to be a little bit inadequate and I'm wondering how could we find better sources to improve the articles reliability/information within the article? I'm not very good at finding better sources so I'm wondering if anybody can? For example under the heading "Controversy" their is a mission in Modern Warfare: 2 listed that is named "No Russian" and basically you go in and shoot a whole ton of civilians at an airport. The article has it linked to the 2011 Norway attacks, which is what the mission is based off. However their are no direct external sources linked to the statistics of the Norway attacks. I feel that if their was it would add more information to the article and increase its reliability. Mcleanlong11 (talk) 15:32, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- How exactly does a 2009 game have links to a 2011 attack? If there's no sources that claim such a link, then there basically isn't. -- ferret (talk) 20:49, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
I completely misunderstood the 2011, 2009 part. I read it backwards and thought one thing was what it actually wasn't. Dumb mistake on my part but thank you for catching it and OK thank you for that info.
- As for sources, WP:VG/RS has a list of video game focused reliable sources that have been vetted. -- ferret (talk) 21:07, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

"Nikolai arrives and helps Price evacuate Soap for medical attention". This line is in the Story section of the page. IN that, the words "medical attention" are a hyperlink which leads to a completely unrelated link. That should be changed to an actual page of "medical attention" or it should not be a hyperlink at all. 49.207.196.49 (talk) 04:07, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
- Done. ‑‑Volteer1 (talk) 08:39, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
- The original purpose of that easter egg link is that the hyperlinked event sets up the events for the third game. Dibol (talk) 09:22, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Dibol: perhaps that could be explained in the prose, and linked that way? ‑‑Volteer1 (talk) 09:28, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Didn't the Russians launch the invasion from the West and East coast?
DJ Tachanka (talk) 08:24, 28 June 2021 (UTC)In the cutscene for the mission 'Wolverines!' you can see that before it pans to the East coast of the US the camera is focusing on the West coast, with the same large number of red dots signifying aircraft, however in the article is just lists it as 'An invasion on the East coast of the US'.
- You are forgetting the fact the the U.S. satellite systems were compromised. West Coast and the Northern continents were false alarms.Dibol (talk) 03:13, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, I never thought of it that way, I thought that it was implying an invasion from both fronts. Thanks. DJ Tachanka (talk) 09:15, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Edit title to say "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)"
To ensure that there is no confusion between Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 and the new upcoming Modern Warfare II. Is there any way to add the "2009" part to the title to make it clear which version of the game this is?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 → Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009 video game) – To differentiate from the 2022 game of similar name. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 18:31, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose move. The 2022 game uses Roman numerals, and the hatnote works well enough. O.N.R. (talk) 21:29, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- Old Naval Rooftops By what you said, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022 video game) should move to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II with that in mind. Am I correct? Jovanmilic97 (talk) 19:11, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that was my intent. O.N.R. (talk) 20:23, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose move. The 2009 game is the original MW2 and the article title should probably stay the same, and maybe since the games use different number indicators (2 or II), we could use page moves like what O.N.R. stated.

That’s stupid since they’ve got completely different titles. Johnsmith212254 (talk) 18:28, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
MW2019 should just be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare since COD4 is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Johnsmith212254 (talk) 18:29, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- This isn't about the original or it's remake. This is about the 2/IIs. -- ferret (talk) 19:39, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- Opposed Hatnote suffices, this is the original game and the primary topic at this time. -- ferret (talk) 19:43, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
Oppose. MW2 is the original and is an iconic video game. Alexysun (talk) 05:50, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
