According to a note on the record, the song was chosen as the official anthem for "World Contact Day" with alien worlds should it happen in the future.
Chosen by whom? Who are these "officials"? This claim is sounding more and more ridiculous as time passes - imagine aliens landing in the year 4923, only to be played a recording from the 1970s! Even if they landed tomorrow this would be embarrassing, to say the least! If aliens ever do land, it won't be like a hollywood movie, and there probably won't be a bunch of hippies playing songs at them. So I ask again, who are these self-appointed offficials who "chose" this as the "anthem" of their silly concept? Graham 05:15, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're making the concept sound ridiculous and unthinkable. I guess I heard Richard Carpenter calling it "The Recognized Anthem of World Contact Day", but I think it's cool that they would play an old 1970s song if something did happen. Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 18:50, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Graham has to agree that those hippies had a quite accurate sense of marketing when they came up with this "anthem label". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Osirisvp (talkcontribs) 23:06, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is a mention of cover art by Andrew Probert. Which version? Klaatu? Carpenters? The factoid follows a paragraph about the most recent cover version, which kind of implies it's for that. Can we find a source to cite? --Karen | Talk | contribs 01:01, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

this song was covered-(strangely enough-a cover of a cover) on the cover album 'If i were a carpenter' by 'babes in toyland'. source: http://www.amazon.com/If-Were-Carpenter-Various-Artists/dp/B000005IL6 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.153.95.218 (talk) 19:03, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Klaatu and The Beatles

edit

Does nobody remember the whole palaver about Klaatu being actually The Beatles secretly reformed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.158.242.152 (talk) 12:13, 26 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I certainly do. Eligius (talk) 02:18, 26 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

What Persuaded the Carpenters to Record this Song?

edit

Klaatu were a progressive rock outfit, and I didn't think the Carpenters listened to progressive rock. This song made the Australian Top Forty, and was the Carpenters' last Australian hit. Eligius (talk) 02:23, 26 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
