Identity

There's some doubt about identity here.

CricInfo and McCarron have Calvert; CricketArchive has Charles (the NZC version of this which isn't paywalled is here). There is no doubt that both people existed. I can place Charles in Otago at the right sort of time. I can place Calvert in the UK in 1861 and 1867 (shooting grouse amongst other things), but I can't definitively place him in NZ at any point in his life or in the UK at the time the two matches were played. I suspect this is Charles - I've only stuck with Calvert because McCarron has that - but Charles seems more likely.

Pinging @Grutness, NealeWellington, Paora, and Sammyrice: all of whom have managed to access NZ stuff that I can't in the past. In particular, is there anyway to access ship registers to show that a Calvert Worthington travelled to/from NZ at this sort of time? Thought I'd ask y'all first and then ask other editors if nothing else comes up. Thanks - and apologies for the ping if this isn't interesting right now. I know that some ships' registers are available here at the Dunedin Public Library (they're not online as far as I know), but the registers for ships coming to Otago become very messy in the 1860s due to the Otago gold rush of 1861-63. I'll have a look next time I'm in the library unless someone finds something beforehand. Grutness...wha? 13:38, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

I was wondering if the gold rush timing would be the reason that a seemingly well off chap from a brewing family might have been off having a bit of an adventure on the other side of the world. He's definitely Charles. I've done a bit of research on him, and hope to have it up on Wikipedia soon. Calvert was a different man who probably never went to New Zealand. Sammyrice (talk) 20:55, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Might be best to redirect this page to the brewery family one and create a new page for Charles? I am certain they are two different people - Charles was the NZ cricketer, but he is not the same person as UK cricketer of the same name.

The NZ cricketer was born 16 July 1835, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, England and died 5 February 1904, Durban, Natal, South Africa. According to information from the NZ cricketers archive he moved to NZ and was Warden of the Waitahuna goldfields. He sounds like he was a bit of a character having taken money from the government for his own use, fleeing to Australia, back to England, and finally to Transvaal.
