what is the correct pronunciation?
The only correct pronunciation is the original Spanish pronunciation (as mentioned by many below), roughly "Cam-ah-ree-oh". This page should reflect the correct pronunciation and encourage any seeking info on this city to pronounce its name correctly. Samuraid (talk) 06:18, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
cam-a-ril-lo?
it sure does not read cam-a-RIO to me. —This unsigned comment was added by 149.142.68.79 (talk • contribs) .
As a resident, the commonly accepted pronunciation is Cam (as in Cameron), A (as in, Alyssa), Ree (as in Reed), Yo (as in Yo-Yo). Essentially, CAM A REE OH. As a friend of the family after which the city is named, they consider this too to be the correct pronunciation. The double-L is pronounced as "Y," as is typical for Mexican Spanish. The most likely mispronunciation is CAM A RILL OH, similar to the accepted pronunciation of the city of Amarillo in Texas.
Simply put -- Cam A Ree Oh, not Cam A Rill Oh. Rhymes with "Rio" as in Rio Grande, does not rhyme with "Pillow." -webbrg
- i think the pronunciation is actually closer to 'cam-a-ree-yo' than 'cam-a-ree-oh', but as long as it's not pronounced like Amarillo it's all good ;) --Frantik 18:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- Cam-A-Ree-Oh and Cam-a-ree-yo both can be heard. Cam-a-ree-yo is the way native English speakers may have the word roll off their tongue, though Cam-a-ree-o/oh would be more similar to the correct pronunciation of Adolfo Camarillo's name.
Peter Amass has agreed to allow his excellent Camarillo page to be placed on wikipedia
This page already reads like an encyclopedia, so it should be easy to bring over from his site.

- copied, pasted and wikified most of his site, save the outdated demographic info. Could probably another going over to ensure proper tone however. --Frantik 18:58, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
"California State University, Channel Islands"
All the other branches of what used to be called the State College system, that I have heard of, and also other public colleges and universities in California, have the name of where they are. Camarillo is not on a channel island. So the name must have been chosen to avoid the assumption that the students were crazy. David R. Ingham 05:36, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Not quite true. All branches have the name of a city, but not necessarily the city in which the college is located. For example, UC San Diego is in La Jolla, California - not San Diego. But your point is valid, in that the nomenclature is inconsistent, as in the case of UCSD, it is named after the metro area, wheras CSUCI, it seems to be named after a set of nearby yet virtually unpopulated islands with hardly a relation to Camarillo. webbrg
- FYI, La Jolla is a neighborhood of the city of San Diego, California. -Will Beback 00:03, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- my mistake... here i quote the wikipedia la jolla entry "The official postal address for La Jolla's 92037 zip code is "La Jolla", not "San Diego" as it is for the other communities within the City of San Diego. This distinction sometimes confuses tourists into believing that La Jolla is actually a separate city." there goes everything i ever believed in. hah. webbrg
I don't know how much this played a role, but Cal State University, Camarillo would be CSUC (sea-suck) which isn't exactly a flattering name. of course CSUCI (sea-sucky) isn't much better --Frantik 01:18, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- The reason for the naming was 2 fold. First, they wanted to get rid of the association with Camarillo State Hospital. Second, they wanted to identify the school with the general area. Also, it is possible that the school lies outside of the city limits.
Well, here is the real reason: there was a lot of competition for the placement of the Ventura County campus between different cities of the County, mostly between Ventura and Oxnard, depending on the potential site chosen. Most Ventura County folks rebeled against naming it Oxnard when one site near Oxnard was considered. In the end, and when the old Camarillo State Hospital site became available, to avoid and end the political fighting over what to name it, Channel Islands was chosen. Interestingly, some in Oxnard have been trying to get Oxnard's name changed for many years, to something better sounding, such as Channel Islands. David Magney - Ventura County resident since 1959.
- My personal recollection was that the naming had nothing to do with the previous name of the hospital and everything to do with not getting the nickname pronounced "C SUCK", with the official explanation being that it placated nearby cities as well.
Better picture?
No offense to the contributor, but the one picture of Camarillo on the page doesn't even show the city at all.. does anybody have a nice aerial shot of the city? or perhaps taken from near the top of the conejo grade? I don't live nearby otherwise i'd do it :) --Frantik 01:27, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- A year and a half later I finally got the change to take one haha --Frantik 11:55, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for following through. It's a big improvement and worth the wait. BTW, Oxnard, California or California State University, Channel Islands could use pictures too. No hurry. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 08:55, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I plan on being in the area again in November. Perhaps I will get a chance then. --Frantik 01:01, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Crime stats
I stripped all but the first sentence out of the crime info (and put a cite tag on it): "The incidence of all types of crime committed in the city is far below the national average. Ventura County crime rates in general are low, and have fallen in the last 2 years, from 2007 to 2008, according to FBI reports of cities with 100,000 or greater population."
Not only does it reveal a complete misunderstanding of the report, but the report itself is on Ventura County as a whole. It offers specifics on a few cities, but as Camarillo isn't one of them, none of it really belongs here. As I said, I left the first sentence, but unless someone can find something to back that up, it will be gone, too.PacificBoy 02:09, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
