Crime and safety

edit

I have added a Crime and safety section and moved stuff there. Removed the comments in the first section on crime and murder, and added facts and statistics. Unfortunately recent events rather justify the unsourced comments. Pol098 15:58, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've deleted some of what I wrote in this section, as I can't reconcile figures from the police and from camdenresources in the time available. Pol098 16:29, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I removed the (uncited) sentence about illegal taxis touting for business in Camden - this is not known to happen in Camden Town?? --Buyoof 13:36, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

We've got a number of reviews - we don't say whether somewhere is good or not - we are an encyclopedia not a tour guide. Secretlondon 01:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Style

edit

A lot of this article is written in the stilted style of a travel guide. I don't have the time to fix it right now though. DrHydeous 12:53, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Content

edit

A lot of this article has travel-guide-like information. As long as it's not pushing things for commercial interests, this seems OK to me: if I'm going to visit a place, I'd certainly have a look at Wikipedia. But I think it's worth discussing.

For example, the Dublin Castle has been there a long time and has its own character, and must be mentioned. The relatively recent Oh Bar is mentioned, and offers free WiFi access, but has no particular distinction: should it be there? (I myself added it, in the spirit of some existing entries).

I've also reinstated a reference to the prevalence of crime in unlicensed minicabs: relevant to visitors, without pushing any viewpoint. A section on crime in general has been deleted; I don't know if the deletion was justified.

Someone is very intent on advertising a particular school of English here; I've deleted stuff a couple of times. Pol098 02:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

There's a travel wiki for that kind of content, this is supposed to be an encyclopaedia. Some information on the market and surroundings is relevant, but article should concentrate on history and what the area is like. The existing list needs to be knocked back to just notable establishments - one reason might be being there a long time. Others, just have to go. Kbthompson 16:15, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Living in Camden

edit

This whole section seems like an advertisement to me and should be removed.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It reads like a brochure for Real Estate Agents. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.54.67.84 (talk) 03:43, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Legendary??

edit

Excuse me... the 'legendary Amy Whinehouse'?? Allthecoolnamesweretaken 12:42, 15 October 2007 (UTC) Agreed she's far from legendary. Maybe in 40-50 years she could claim such a title if people still remember her then. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.45.124.228 (talk) 17:38, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fire

edit

No mention yet of last weekend's fire. There probably should be...   X  S  G  06:10, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's this then?. It needs expanding... -- Roleplayer (talk) 10:04, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree the fire is important in the context of Camden Market, its of passing notability here - there's a wikinews for that. cheers Kbthompson (talk) 15:09, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

List of bars, etc.

edit

This has been knocked back to the one's that have some claim to notability. Generally, notable venues, bars, etc will already have an article in wikipedia. cheers Kbthompson (talk) 09:46, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photography

edit

There are some truly dreadful photos on this page and really only two reasonable ones. That Gallery probably serves a purpose, but surely there must be some decent photos available, or that readers would like to contribute. Maybe i should make space for some more contributions? Cannabis Culture

edit

Surely there should be a mention of Camden Towns notorious drug culture. There are many shops and stalls throughout Camden Town selling drug paraphernalia not to mention the many tourists who go to Camden for its drug reputation.

The police presence in Camden, quarter hourly patrols down the canal and sniffer dogs on occasion, is also enormous mostly for this reason. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikonwiki (talkcontribs) 22:29, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is it any more notable than any other part of London, say EC1 for cocaine, Whitechapel for crack, etc., and can this be reliably sourced? And "drug paraphernalia" (a term only used, in my experience, by police officers) is not illegal to sell anywhere. So my reaction is "so what?"; try a weekend walking along the canals of Amsterdam. --Rodhullandemu 22:37, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wards

edit

Which wards do we think Camden Town is in (for Governance/Demography)? [1] I'm thinking probably split between mostly Camden Town and Primrose Hill and partly Cantelowes. Could it be said to stretch into any others? MRSC (talk) 21:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

About a third of Camden High Street and Mornington Cres. are in the Regents Park ward, but I wouldn't call the 'Regents Park estate' part of Camden Town. Also strangely my AtoZ puts Camden Town deep into the St Pancras and Somers Town ward near Kings Cross. Perhaps sub postcodes (like NW1 9) define the area better, I'll try to find a map. BTW good job on improving the article. Grim23 23:35, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
For demography we can work around it by saying something like "the bulk of Camden Town is in the wards of.." and then focus on maybe two. Camden's area management is based directly on wards and they have some publications as well as the national stats. [2] MRSC (talk) 08:50, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Red Cap Pub

edit

As an old resident of Camdent Town, (from 1970 to 1979), I don't recall the Worlds End ever being called the Red Cap. However I do recall a pub on the high street which has subsequently disappeared being called The Red Cap or Old Mother Red Cap. Unfortunately I don't remember which of the current shops used to be its location. I do remember it was just up the road, (towards the Tube Station), from The Black Cap. Can anyone throw some light on the matter? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.45.124.228 (talk) 17:36, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes you are right since i first saw it in 1976 and up until not that long ago the pub opposite Camden town tube now called The Camden Eye 2 Kentish Town Road, London, NW1 9NX was Formerly known and as The old Mother Red Cap, The Red Cap and Halfway House. It was also used as a prison. For some reason on the internet The Worlds End pub across the road is being wrongly reported as the site of The Old Mother Red Cap. For some interesting Camden history please read up on http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=45239 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorian 37 (talkcontribs) 01:39, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

It would seem from the volume of material that you've added that this pub may be worthy of its own article, and you may wish to consider splitting it off as such. Rodhullandemu 01:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

The external links section is becoming bloated again, most if not all, are promotional sites with objectionable amounts of advertising. I'm minded to delete the lot per the Links normally to be avoided guideline . Are there any that should be kept? Grim23 18:17, 13 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've looked at them all, probably none, zero. Possibly http://www.streetsensation.co.uk/camden/ca_intro.htm, which has a linear map with pictures showing the various shopfronts. I find it useful, but it is very commercial ("xxx restaurant. Try our specialty dishes... delicious sauces.. Tel (020) 7485 nnnn. Click for more info"). To save having to look this up: there was unanimity that all of a large list of proposed deletions of graffiti in London should be kept, and the outcome was indeed that the files are to be kept (the discussion is closed). A typical comment "This is an indiscriminate and nonsense deletion request. Tantamount to vandalism." Pol098 (talk) 21:15, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
