15 and 16's???

edit

When did Camp Lemonier get F15 and F16 fighters?

The jets there are French Mirages....There are six F15E(?) on the eastern ramp along with P3's and probably an AC-130 Specter.[1]

Left 16 Oct 2008 and no fighters of C17 detachment....

JDF participation in anti-piracy patrols

edit

The JDF had, as of 2010, a contingent of P3 Orion aircraft and crew/support personnel and equipment operating out of Camp Lemonnier. If anyone has a reference for it (other than my OR/personal experience in meeting them), please add it to the article, to honor these fine men.Wzrd1 (talk) 02:03, 29 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Commanding officer is Pete Van Stee not Bertleson

edit

Change of command was May 2. Captain Pete Van Stee is now the commanding officer of the base. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.101.208.218 (talk) 15:01, 20 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

History: Foreign Legion

edit

Camp Lemonnier was not a French Foreign Legion base. It was part of the French Army's Troupes de Marines (formerly known as Troupes Coloniales). Specifically it was an artillery base, as evidenced by the artillery pieces near the main flagpole. In the 'White House' building one can see pictures of the plumed-hat colonial soldiers. 169.252.4.21 (talk) 08:13, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bases

edit

The article says that Camp Lemonnier is the only US military base in Africa, but also that "Camp Lemonnier is the centerpiece of an expanding constellation of half a dozen U.S. drone and surveillance bases in Africa, created to combat a new generation of terrorist groups across the continent, from Mali to Libya to the Central African Republic." Which statement is true? 108.202.209.204 (talk) 09:09, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Camp Lemonnier is the only permanent US military base in Africa. It has around six other small air bases elsewhere on the continent, which operate from remote hangars within local military bases or civilian airports [1]. Please also see List of United States military bases. Middayexpress (talk) 17:01, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
So the other bases are only used when needed? 108.202.209.204 (talk) 00:28, 6 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Apparently. It seems they're utilized on an ad hoc basis, mainly for drone operations. Middayexpress (talk) 16:17, 6 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

10 Year Lease?

edit

Hi all,

The page currently states that:

In May 2014, U.S. President Obama and Djiboutian President Guelleh agreed on a 20-year extension of the American lease, at $63 million a year in rent – about double its previous rate. The US is in the process of expanding the base and plans to spend $1.4 billion upgrading the facility over the next two decades.

The two referenced articles give different lengths:

The National states: "Last year, the US renewed the lease on the camp for 20 years, promising Djibouti $70 million (Dh257m) a year in rent – about double what it was paying before. The US is in the process of expanding the base and plans to spend $1.4 billion upgrading the facility over the next two decades."[2]

Whereas Al Jazeera contradicts it in its headline: "US secures 10-year deal for Djibouti base"[3]

The New York Times [4] also gives 20 years, but I have heard experts refer to a 10 year lease. Can anyone resolve this? Africanedits (talk) 15:07, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
