Etymology

edit

I question the Etymology given.

The entry on "Campbeltown" in A Dictionary of British Place-Names, A. D. Mills, Oxford University Press, 2003. Oxford Reference Online. Oxford University Press. University of Hull. 12 December 2009 <http://www.oxfordreference.com/views/ENTRY.html?subview=Main&entry=t40.e2717> gives a different and prima facie more probable derication for the place: "‘Campbell's town’. Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyle, was granted the site here in 1667 for the erection of a burgh of barony"

Not sure which etymology you're questioning. I can't find any given etymology for the current name in the article prior to your addition. Have I missed something? Your claim seems entirely plausible, but the reference you cite needs subscription access for verification. --Deskford (talk) 13:07, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dál Riata

edit

I have found that Campbeltown was known as Dalruadhain and was allegedly the seat of the Kingdom of Dál Riata for a period before moving to Dunadd in the 8th century. Does anyone know, where the dun used as the seat was located? Regards Newm30 (talk) 10:48, 26 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is a very important article on wind power development by James Meek in the London Review of Books Vol 43 No14 of 15 July 2021 which takes Campbelltown as a starting point and has agreat deal to say about the burghDelahays (talk) 22:31, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
