Origins of the Names

• Alberta was named after Louise Caroline Alberta or Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, daughter of Queen Victoria; indirectly Alberta is likely linked to Albert, Prince Consort, father of the princess and husband to Victoria

• British Columbia was named after the Columbia District of the Hudson's Bay Company; Columbia District is named for the Columbia River and is indirectly linked to Italian born Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus

• Manitoba was named for Lake Manitoba, from the combined Assiniboine words Mini and tobow meaning "Lake of the Prairie" or Cree word maniotwapow meaning the strait of the spirit or manitobau

• Newfoundland and Labrador was named for the English term New Found Land and after explorer João Fernandes Lavrador; Lavrador is Portuguese for the Landholder

• New Brunswick was named in honour of the British monarch, King George III of the House of Brunswick (Haus Braunschweig); indirectly Brunswick is linked to the German city of Braunschweig

• Northwest Territories was named for the geographical location relative to Rupert's Land (territory northwest of Rupert's Land)

• Nova Scotia was named for the Latin term for New Scotland; indirectly the Land of the Scots

• Nunavut means our land in Inuktitut

• Ontario was named for Lake Ontario, from the Iroquois word Skanadario meaning beautiful lake or sparkling water

• Prince Edward Island was named after Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent, the father of Queen Victoria

• Quebec was named for the Algonquin word meaning strait or narrowing (Kebec); other variations Quebecq — Levasseur 1601, Kébec - Lescarbot 1609, Québec — Champlain 1613

• Saskatchewan was name for the Saskatchewan River; indirectly Saskatchewan in Cree meaning swift flowing river (kisiskāciwani-sīpiy)

• Yukon was named for the Yukon River; indirectly Yukon meaning "great river" in Gwich’in
