Talk:Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery

Latest comment: 6 years ago by Cloptonson in topic Where did they die?

Title of the page

edit

It would be better if the the title of this page was Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery as this is the actual name of the cemetery (see the name on the carved plinth that stands at the entrance, as show in the article). Also the change would avoid confusion with The Cannock Chase War Cemetery, which is a completely separate cemetery located a few hundred meters away from this cemetery.Forscher scs (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Infobox statement

edit

The infobox states the cemetery is burying place for those "deceased 1914-1918 and 1939-1945". While this is an accepted way of describing the periods of the two World Wars, note that there were burials in the cemetery of those whose deaths occurred as late as 1919 (for WWI) and 1948 (for WWII), prior to completion of POW repatriations.Cloptonson (talk) 10:52, 11 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cloptonson is correct about the extended range of the deaths. It would be more accurate to say deaths associated with the two world wars. However, I think the statement, as is, merely reflects the wording on the plinth outside the cemetery itself and the extended range of deaths could be worked into the main article quite easily. Likewise the official title of the cemetery is "German Military" whereas these buried there originate from Germany, Austria and the Ukraine and not all are military personnel and this has been covered in the main article.Forscher scs (talk) 09:27, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Where did they die?

edit

A lot of dead people. Did that many German people die in UK territory? Were they mostly internees, or crash-landed aviators, or what? Afterbrunel (talk) 17:00, 7 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

The dead were chiefly internees or military prisoners of war, victims of aircraft crashlandings or shot-down, or bodies of seamen washed ashore (a few of the latter unidentified).Cloptonson (talk) 21:26, 12 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
