Milo Yiannopoulos

edit

I made this bold addition but it was reverted. I think it should be included in some form. Several news outlets have connected the shooting with Yiannopoulos' comments.

Two days before the shooting, reports surfaced that Milo Yiannopoulos had told at least two news organizations who had requested comments, that he wanted vigilantes to shoot journalists. According to a reporter for the New York Observer, he wrote in a text message "I can't wait for vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight".[1][2] Two days later, following a shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland in which five people were killed, Yiannopoulos denied that his comments were responsible, adding that his remarks were a joke.[3] He later posted on Instagram that he sent the messages to troll journalists.[4] On Facebook he wrote "You’re about to see a raft of news stories claiming that I am responsible for inspiring the deaths of journalists." and "The truth, as always, is the opposite of what the media tells you."[5][6]

Are there reliable sources specifically connecting these comments to this shooting? bd2412 T 23:12, 28 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there are several. I even cited a few.- MrX 🖋 23:15, 28 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
A far-left disinformation activist group like the SPLC is not a reliable source. 109.229.66.48 (talk) 00:43, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Aside from the fact that that is the most horseshit description of the SPLC I've ever seen, all those other mainstream news sources are definitely reliable. ♠PMC(talk) 00:45, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Can we automatically cross out or mark comments like those from disruptive IP accounts, refering to (109.229.66.48), that have made like one or two contributions to like one article that that are only negative like this? 1bcdbackup (talk) 17:33, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Give it a day or two to see if Milo actually had any impact on the event. PackMecEng (talk) 01:32, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It is seeming less likely, given the shooter's previous grudge against his target, although it is possible that he was finally triggered to carry out the attack by some item of anti-journalist rhetoric. bd2412 T 13:48, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
It is certainly possible, that is why I was hoping to wait a day or two and more gets released about him and his motives. If that ends up being the case I would be more than fine adding the content back. PackMecEng (talk) 13:59, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is unlikely that there is a causal connection here, but that's not the only consideration. Multiple sources have highlighted this as an important aspect of the subject. WP:POV would seem to support inclusion. - MrX 🖋 14:14, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I agree with PackMecEng. Give it a day or two to see if anything comes up from the police interviews of the shooter. bd2412 T 14:16, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

With the plethora of coverage connecting the shooting to Trump's attacks on the media, I've gone ahead and included a short section in the Reactions section. Feel free to remove if it's premature, but it's important to have as part of the context. SounderBruce 00:43, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • So at this point it looks like Trump and Yiannopoulos had nothing to do with the shooting and more prior history of the suspect to the publication rather than anything political. The info in the article makes an implication that was not true. That being the case, should the material remain as there is no actual connection? PackMecEng (talk) 23:05, 1 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
I think it should still stay because it's been covered extensively in relation to the shooting - even if it seems like conjecture. It's absolutely relevant. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 23:43, 1 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Aye, it is presently framed as conjecture by the media in this article, and I feel it should stay in more or less its present form. We're not here to find the truth or right great wrongs; merely to cover what people have covered, and this is indeed something that has been widely covered. Icarosaurvus (talk) 01:01, 2 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
I received some coverage the day of the shooting and the day after. Then most of the RS figured out he was unrelated. Now while there is still decent coverage of the shooting, Milo is not talked about. I am not sure how it serves the reader to give misleading information. It was related to the shooting to start with but no longer has weight for it. PackMecEng (talk) 02:06, 2 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Trump content should be trimmed down.

edit

In retrospect, it looks like this shooting had very little to do with politics, and was solely due to an apolitical, personal grievance between the perp and the paper. Based on this evidence, I would recommend that most of the material concerning Trump and other political interests be removed. While it is probably necessary to note that at the time, political blame was made, we now know that this was not a political-related event, and the majority of this content is no longer relevant. Five-year update

edit

I've added Five years after the Capital Gazette murders, we’ve scattered. Remembering brings us together as an external link; but it might be more useful as a source for updates, if anyone feels so inclined. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:59, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
