Major port

That's true, but your edit[2] created the impression that it is either "a major port" in general terms (which I don't think is true of any of the Welsh ports except Milford Haven[3]) or "the major port of South Wales" (again, Milford Haven, Port Talbot and Newport handle larger tonnages). I think the most significant thing about Cardiff Docks is its historical role in coal exporting, which is why I prefer the current lead. Pondle (talk) 12:42, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

I've just realised I left out a on my edit, I intended it to read a major port in South Wales. This doesn't imply it is a major port of Wales (as a whole), nor the major port of South Wales.

But that could be read as a "major port" that happens to be in South Wales', which I think is misleading. The problem with the word "major" is that it is highly subjective and conveys little real information. The articles on Newport Docks and Port Talbot Docks don't make claims that these ports are "major ports in South Wales", despite the fact that they handle more tonnage than Cardiff. If you want to describe what port of Cardiff is today, why not simply say something like "Cardiff Docks is a port in South Wales, formerly the main port of export for South Wales coal" or something similar.
