Article for history of appointment choice

For what it's worth, we don't have an obvious place to include histories of senate appointment selections such as the one for Hillary's seat. In some cases, there's almost as much drama in this as in an election (cf. Illinois for sure!) So, I've started building material in United States Senate special election in New York, 2010#Possible appointment choices, since the appointment process is really the first phase of any special election. Reference style

It looks like one editor in the course of cleaning up references has also been changing all existing references from vertical style to horizontal style. Wikipedia protocol calls for either. Can we at least agree not to change existing references from vertical to horizontal, or vice versa for that matter? It seems an unecessary interference and I, for one, find the horizontal style difficult to read and to follow changes. --Crunch (talk) 23:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Sorry - that probably was me. I guess the problem is I find the vertical layout to take up way too much space and be hard to follow and edit the article text itself. With the horizontal style you just skip ahead to after the brackets and can follow the sentence - with the vertical, especially with multiple citations at one point, it is harder to see, and therefore edit, the text which is obscured by the long citation. Most of the articles I work on use the horizontal, so I do tend to change verticals when I see them. I'm more concerned with following the text changes that are made, so that's why I prefer the horizontal which you get used to after a while. This problem may not have a solution that will be comfortable for all, but maybe others have an opinion. Tvoz/talk 20:33, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

I can work with either but tend to prefer the horizontal style because its easier to edit the text, and as the article grows in size it prevents the page from becoming extremely elongated with white-space. -- GateKeeper^(X) @ 22:49, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

How she was told of her father's assassination

The article in its present state (Dec. 21, 2008) says, "The day of her father's death, nanny Maude Shaw took Caroline and John Jr. from the White House (who at the time, had not been told of the incident) to the house of their maternal grandmother, Janet Lee Bouvier." Two problems: [1] The parenthetical is clearly in the wrong place, but where it belongs depends on whether John Jr. and/or Maude Shaw knew about the assassination at the time; does anyone have a reference to those facts? [2] The word "incident" seems a strangely minimal thing to call the murder of someone's father. DSatz (talk) 13:35, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
