Okay, so because of WP:DAB#Partial title matches Carpenter House IS NOT a disambiguation page, it is a list. Thus I am removing {DisambigProject}. I am also removing {WikiProject NRHP|class=dab} for the same reason. This means I will have to remove Carpenter House (disambiguation) and the related links. Why? Because of DAB links, suggestions to fix it one way then another. Jrcrin001 (talk) 02:30, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
rename of article
editOkay. I now need to figure out how to rename Carpenter House to List of Carpenter Houses. Does anyone have an objection to this? FYI, I did not create this page. Jrcrin001 (talk) 02:43, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, i object. It's a disambiguation page covering places that may be known as "Carpenter House". Note that hyphenated names such as "Carpenter-Smith House" usually reflect that a house was owned by two families, and has likely been known as either name, unhyphenated, as "Carpenter House" or "Smith House". Also, places with a first name first, like "Ezra Carpenter House" are known locally and otherwise as the shorter name, "Carpenter House". Yes in the current draft there are other names which might not be likely to be confused. Those should be moved to a See also section perhaps. Please discuss. There is no need for a separate List of carpenter houses article. --doncram (talk) 12:42, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- I am confused. As mentioned above, just having "Carpenter House" mentioned in the title - or something similar - prevents it from being a disambig page. The criteria for a list is related items, which this is. Which is wiki right? Jrcrin001 (talk) 17:23, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- If there is one non-compliant element on a disambiguation page, that might better be corrected instead of changing the page to a non-disambiguation page. It does not seem useful to me for there to be two, largely overlapping pages, both requiring maintenance. Please note there is a steady pace of creation of articles on NRHP-listed places, so most or all of the items here will have articles in a year or two.
- What do you object to specifically? About whether "Carpenter House" is an alternative past or current name for "Carpenter-Smith House", that is essentially my educated guess, based on past experience with NRHP documents for many other places having hyphenated names. It is logical that local or common usage will often find a shorter name to use, if the longer name is not always necessary to distinguish vs. another very nearby place of similar name. I don't think it is worth investigating more deeply whether or not documentation can be found proving that "Carpenter House" has been used in print in mentioning the house named "Carpenter-Smith House". It seems easiest and best just to put an entry into this dab page, and let readers and editors find their way to what they want. This is in compliance with wp:MOSDAB i believe.
- There are other ways in which the current page is not in perfect compliance with wp:MOSDAB guidelines, having to do with compliance with MOS:DABRL provisions. I tagged the article with "NRHP dab needing cleanup" and will fix those. I would rather fix than duplicate with a separate list-article. Also, FYI, i have previously considered removing the "disambig" tag from similar pages, and presenting the page as a wp:SETINDEX list-article instead. One reason might be to get away from strict MOSDAB guidelines and scrutiny of disambiguation-focused editors. However, it seems wrong to attempt to get out of reach of guidelines by mislabelling a page that is really and truly meant as disambiguation. I don't happen to feel there is real need/constituency for a list article about places that randomly share the same common name. Does this help? Please continue. --doncram (talk) 17:55, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I have no objections per se, but other "Disambig sheriffs" do and have forced other Carpenter disambig pages to list pages citing the partial name criteria. It is frustrating. The information on this Carpenter House (disambiguation) page has been transfered over to List of Carpenter related articles. I can live with that. Dumping the Carpenter House (disambiguation) to List of Historic Carpenter Houses or something similar would also work.
I will not waste my time by maintaining something that does not help those interested in the Carpenter name. When a disambig page creates more problems than it is worth, I will use list pages and ignore the disambig page. I thank you for your patience. But I am rather frustrated at the PC-disambig police.
